Cline’s case for an open AI coding harness is that the agent’s runtime should be reusable beyond one IDE extension. In May 2026, the company said it extracted that runtime into the Cline SDK after the extension-centered architecture became harder to maintain, extend, embed, and reuse. The SDK is presented as a shared engine for Cline’s own products and for other developers building agents and integrations—not as proof that openness alone makes coding agents more capable.

What Cline means by an open coding harness

A coding harness is the runtime that coordinates an AI model with a software project: it manages the agent loop, tools, context, and interactions that let an agent inspect or change files and run commands. Cline describes its SDK as that shared runtime, separated from any one user interface. The company says the separation is intended to let the same engine serve different product surfaces and outside integrations.

Cline’s repository describes the project as available through a command-line interface, desktop application, VS Code extension, JetBrains plugin, and SDK. Its stated license is Apache 2.0. However, the repository says the JetBrains plugin is currently not open-sourced; the existence of an open-source project and runtime should not be read as meaning every client is open source. See the Cline GitHub repository and Cline’s SDK announcement.

Why Cline says it separated the runtime

In its May 13, 2026 announcement, Cline said the agent architecture had grown inside the VS Code extension as capabilities accumulated. The company’s explanation is that this made the runtime increasingly difficult to maintain, extend, embed, and reuse. It says extracting the harness into the SDK creates a product-agnostic layer that can power its own interfaces as well as integrations built by other teams.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The announcement describes a layered TypeScript architecture, a provider layer separate from the agent loop, and a stateless agent loop paired with durable sessions. Cline says sessions can move across product surfaces. These are the company’s design description and stated aims; they do not independently establish that the architecture improves task success, reliability, or portability in every implementation.

  • 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
  • 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
  • Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
  • 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Plan and Act modes: separate planning from execution, with the agent able to edit files and run terminal commands.
  • Review controls: diffs, checkpoints, and user approval are documented; auto-approval is also available, so the degree of human oversight depends on configuration.
  • Project guidance: .clinerules and skills can provide project-specific instructions.
  • Tools and integrations: plugins and Model Context Protocol (MCP) support are described for connecting tools, external systems, and custom capabilities.
  • Additional workflows: Cline lists CLI, scheduled, and multi-agent workflows.

These are published product capabilities, not independent findings about how safely or consistently they work. In practice, the harness’s openness gives developers room to inspect or adapt it, while tool permissions and approval settings still matter: auto-approval and external tools can expand what an agent is able to do.

How Cline works with different AI models

Cline presents provider choice as a layer that can be changed without tying the agent loop to one model vendor. Its repository lists Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, OpenRouter, Vercel AI Gateway, AWS Bedrock, Azure, Google Cloud Vertex, Cerebras, Groq, Ollama, LM Studio, and OpenAI-compatible endpoints. The SDK announcement separately names Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, AWS Bedrock, Mistral, LiteLLM, and compatible endpoints including vLLM, Together, and Fireworks. The lists differ, so consult the repository and Cline website for current availability rather than treating either list as exhaustive or definitive. Cline says providers can be added through a handler interface.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Provider flexibility does not make model behavior, cost, or security equivalent. A hosted service and a local runtime such as Ollama or LM Studio also have different operational requirements. The harness can offer a common integration point, but users still need to choose and configure the model environment that fits their project.

What Cline’s benchmark figures show—and what they do not

Cline’s announcement says “N/A” in its comparison table means there was no published run for that agent-and-model pairing on tbench.ai. It also mentions faster completion and lower token cost in internal comparisons of the new CLI with the old one, but does not provide figures or a detailed methodology, so those observations cannot support a quantified comparison.

How to evaluate Cline against another coding agent

There is no single “best” harness for every project. A useful comparison looks at the trade-offs that affect your own workflow rather than treating openness or one benchmark score as a complete verdict:

  • Model choice: Which hosted providers and local runtimes are supported for your preferred models?
  • Where it runs: Do you need an IDE extension, terminal workflow, desktop app, SDK, or a combination?
  • Extensibility: Can you add the tools, MCP connections, plugins, or project guidance your team needs?
  • Oversight: Are approvals, diffs, and checkpoints a good fit for your risk tolerance and development process?
  • Portability: Can sessions and workflows move between the interfaces you use?
  • Open-source scope: Which components are actually open, under what license, and are all clients included?
  • Measured performance: Are task results, cost, and latency independently reproducible under conditions relevant to your work?

Cline’s published case is strongest as an architectural argument: separate the agent runtime from the interface so it can be reused and extended. Its feature descriptions and team-run benchmark results help explain the project’s position, but they are not an independent product ranking.
