Neither a claw anchor nor a plow anchor is universally better. A plow is a sensible all-around option for varied seabeds; a claw can set readily in many conditions and may suit boats that often encounter rocky or mixed ground. Your seabed, the exact anchor model, boat and weather conditions, and correct deployment matter more than the style name alone.

How to choose between a claw and a plow anchor

Start with the bottom where you actually anchor, then compare specific models that fit your boat and bow arrangement. West Marine cautions that seabed suitability can matter more than anchor design, and that performance varies between tests. Its anchor selection guide describes plow and scoop anchors as broadly useful across varying conditions; its guidance also notes that claws can struggle in hard clay or heavy grass.

  • Mostly sand or mud: A plow is a reasonable candidate, but do not assume every plow performs alike or that it automatically beats every claw. Compare the exact models for the bottom you use.
  • Rock or mixed ground: A claw may catch, and West Marine lists both claw and plow designs among possible options. But rock can make holding precarious: an anchor may snag rather than bury, so neither design guarantees a secure set.
  • Grass, weed, or hard clay: Treat either choice cautiously. Vegetation or a rock can create a false set that looks secure but may break free as load rises or the boat changes direction. Government boating guidance recommends choosing sand or firm mud where possible and avoiding weed when feasible.

West Marine’s summary of anchor testing reports that several independent programs broadly replicated a pattern in which newer designs such as Rocna, Spade, Manson Supreme, and Mantus outperformed traditional CQR, Delta, and Bruce/claw designs in firm to moderately loose sand. It also notes that rankings can reverse in soft mud and that reset results differ. Those findings are not a universal claw-versus-plow result: the source does not establish a general, directly comparable holding-power figure for the two categories.

Claw vs. plow: practical trade-offs

Factor Claw anchor Plow anchor
Sand and mud Suitability depends on the exact model and seabed. A reasonable all-around candidate; plow and scoop types are described as broadly useful. The government guide says CQR/plough anchors hold well in varied seabeds, especially mud.
Rock May catch, but holding can be precarious because an anchor may snag rather than dig in. May catch, but holding can be precarious because an anchor may snag rather than dig in.
Grass and hard clay Can struggle in heavy grass or hard clay; a false set is possible. Grass and rock can produce false sets; verify that the anchor has actually dug in.
Reset after the boat swings or the pull reverses Not guaranteed; reset behavior varies among models and tests. Not guaranteed; reset behavior varies among models and tests.
Stowage West Marine says a claw can be awkward to stow; the government guide notes Bruce/claw can stow under a bowsprit. Can be awkward to stow; West Marine says plow and scoop shapes work best with a bow roller or bowsprit. The government guide says CQR/plough is suitable for a bowsprit.

The table describes category-level guidance, not a guarantee for every product. Anchor shape, construction, and the seabed all affect what happens when you deploy and retrieve it.

Choose anchor size for your boat and conditions

Anchor style alone is not enough to select a size. West Marine provides the following approximate ranges for plow/scoop and claw anchors, based on boat length and weight. It calls these guidelines, not a universal sizing standard; use the selected anchor model’s manufacturer chart and account for windage, exposure, and weather.

Boat length Boat weight Approximate anchor weight in West Marine’s guide
Up to 20 ft Up to 2,500 lb 7–10 lb
20–25 ft 2,500–5,000 lb 10–15 lb
25–35 ft 5,000–10,000 lb 15–25 lb
35–45 ft 10,000–20,000 lb 25–35 lb
45–60 ft 20,000–40,000 lb 35–55 lb
Over 60 ft 40,000 lb or more 55 lb or more

These are West Marine’s approximate ranges, not a prescription for a particular vessel. Check the exact manufacturer’s chart before buying; boat displacement, windage, and exposure can change the appropriate choice.

Use sufficient scope and confirm the anchor is set

Scope is the length of rode paid out divided by the vertical distance from the bow chock to the bottom. Recommendations differ by source and conditions rather than establishing one universal minimum. West Marine recommends at least 5:1 in calm, protected conditions, 7:1 in open anchorages or for overnight anchoring and above 15 knots, and 10:1 in storm conditions where room permits. The Western Australia Department of Transport guide lists 3:1 for calm conditions, 5:1 for fair conditions, and 7:1 for moderate conditions. Follow guidance appropriate to your location and situation, and allow enough room for the boat to swing.

  1. Lower the anchor; do not throw it. Let the boat move back while you pay out the rode.
  2. Apply reverse briefly. This helps check whether the anchor has dug in rather than merely caught on vegetation or an obstruction.
  3. Check your position against fixed references. Use landmarks or bearings to detect movement after setting.
  4. Keep monitoring. A set that initially appears secure can fail as conditions or pull direction change.

This deployment sequence follows the Western Australia government guide. West Marine also recommends checking that the anchor has set. Neither a successful initial check nor a particular anchor style removes the need to monitor for drift.

Check how the anchor fits your bow and boat

Before settling on either type, check that the anchor works with your bow roller, locker, and retrieval arrangement. West Marine notes that plow and scoop shapes can be awkward to stow and work best with a bow roller or bowsprit; the government guide describes bowsprit stowage options for both Bruce/claw and CQR/plough types. A design that fits your boat securely and can be deployed and recovered properly is more useful than one that only looks suitable on a comparison chart.
