Neither Claude nor ChatGPT is a universal winner for WordPress. If you want AI features inside the editor, WordPress 7.0’s provider-agnostic AI Client and Connectors API can route requests to either Anthropic or OpenAI. If you want an assistant to inspect or change site content, you need a separate assistant-to-site integration, and its supported actions and permissions depend on the plugin. Choose by task and setup—not by an unverified claim that one model writes better.
What is the difference between using AI in WordPress and connecting an assistant to your site?
These are two distinct workflows. A provider connector lets a WordPress feature send a model request—for example, to generate an excerpt or image alt text from an editor option. An assistant-to-site integration connects an external assistant to WordPress so it can potentially read or modify site content. A connector is not, by itself, permission for Claude or ChatGPT to operate your site.

Can you use Claude or ChatGPT in the WordPress editor?
WordPress 7.0 introduced a provider-agnostic PHP AI Client, with Anthropic and OpenAI among its initial featured connectors. The connector layer means the editor workflow need not be tied to one provider: a WordPress AI feature can use a supported provider through its connector. The official integration material describes how to connect providers and enable features; it does not compare Claude and ChatGPT output quality.
WordPress.org’s Connectors documentation describes the setup under Settings > Connectors, where Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI are listed as featured connectors. The documented route involves installing an AI plugin and a provider connector, entering a valid API key, then enabling the features you want, such as image generation, excerpt generation, or alt-text generation. The WordPress AI plugin listing describes its features as manually triggered and opt-in, labels the plugin experimental, and recommends testing it in staging; these are the listing’s own guidance and claims.

What does the Anthropic connector support?
The WordPress.org Anthropic provider listing describes text generation, function calling, extended thinking, and dynamic model discovery. It requires an Anthropic API key and says it works with the PHP AI Client SDK. Its compatibility notes specify PHP 7.4 or higher; for WordPress 6.9, the wordpress/php-ai-client package is required, while WordPress 7.0 and later needs no additional changes. The listing’s version 1.0.5 entry is dated 2026-10-01, so check the current listing before relying on version-specific compatibility details.
The documented Connectors screen also lists OpenAI, but the sources cited here do not establish a comparable feature-by-feature specification for its provider plugin. Confirm the requirements for the exact connector and AI plugin you plan to use.

Can Claude or ChatGPT directly edit WordPress posts?
Potentially, through a separate assistant-to-site plugin or protocol integration—not merely by adding a provider connector. For example, the WordPress.org listing for AlphaBridge MCP says its integration can read and edit posts, pages, media, taxonomies, and comments, and that it checks WordPress permissions for each tool call. Those are claims from that plugin’s listing, not independent verification or a guarantee that another MCP plugin, site, or assistant plan supports the same actions.
Before granting an assistant access, check which operations are available and whether access is read-only or includes changes. Review how the integration authenticates and applies WordPress permissions, and test its behavior with an account and content appropriate to the task. Do not assume that a connector used for editor generation provides the same access as an assistant-to-site plugin.

How should a WordPress integration handle credentials and permissions?
Protect provider API keys
WordPress Connectors documentation says a key entered in the interface is stored as a database setting and masked in the UI, but is not encrypted in the database. The documented lookup order is environment variable, PHP constant, then database setting. Site owners who need to avoid storing a key in the database can use the environment-variable or PHP-constant options; ensure those values are managed securely on the server.
Limit what AI features can do
WordPress Core’s “Introducing the AI Client in WordPress 7.0,” published 2026-03-24, says the client-side JavaScript API can send arbitrary prompts and is restricted by default to high-privilege users. For distributed plugins, Felix Arntz recommends specific server-side endpoints with granular permission checks: “For now, the recommended approach is to implement individual REST API endpoints for each specific AI feature your plugin provides, and have your JavaScript functionality call those endpoints.” This is developer guidance for building WordPress AI features, and it underlines why a narrowly scoped editor action and a broadly capable site assistant require different permission decisions.

Choose a connector-based editor workflow when
- You want to trigger a specific generation or editing feature from WordPress, such as an excerpt or alt text.
- Your WordPress version and selected plugins support the required AI Client and connector setup.
- You can supply and manage the provider’s API key and choose which features to enable.
Consider an assistant-to-site integration when
- You need an assistant to inspect or change site content through supported operations.
- The plugin explicitly documents the actions you need and how it applies WordPress permissions.
- You can control write access and verify the integration on a staging site before using it with live content.
Choose the provider by fit, not an unsupported winner claim
If both providers are available for your chosen editor workflow, the WordPress integration layer alone does not establish which will produce better writing, value, or results for your site.
