Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If Claude Desktop stopped launching after an in-app update on Windows, ending any remaining Claude processes is a reasonable first check—but it is not a proven fix for this particular failure. In one report involving Claude’s MSIX app, ending the visible process and re-registering the package did not restore launch; a full Windows restart did. Work through the lower-risk checks first, and use Windows’ Repair option before Reset if it is available.
What the reported Claude update failure looks like
A user report opened July 22, 2026 describes Claude Desktop installed as an MSIX package on Windows, version Claude_1.24012.1.0_x64__pzs8sxrjxfjjc. After an in-app update, Windows displayed “Another program is currently using this file.” The reporter said no Claude.exe process was visible; ending the visible process, stopping CoworkVMService, and manually re-registering the AppX package did not restore launch. A full Windows restart reportedly restored that installation. This is one user’s account, not an official Claude resolution or evidence that all users will see the same message. Read the issue report.
The reporter proposed that a stale kernel-level object held by Windows’ AppInfo/UAC service could explain the behavior. That is an unconfirmed hypothesis, not an established cause. A separate July 14, 2026 user report describes an update where the old process did not finish quitting, the new package registered, and the relaunched app hung before a later manual relaunch worked; it adds context but does not establish how common the problem is. Read the second report.
Try these recovery steps in order
- Save work and close Claude normally. If Claude is responsive, close it from the app before using Task Manager.
- End only remaining Claude processes. Open Task Manager, find processes clearly belonging to Claude, and end them. Microsoft recommends closing running app instances and, when necessary, terminating background processes for an MSIX update blocked because the package is in use. Its generic PowerShell example is
Get-Process -Name "MyApp" | Stop-Process -Force; do not copy the placeholder process name as-is, and do not stop processes unless you understand what they target. This guidance addresses an app-in-use deployment block, not every post-update launch failure. Microsoft’s MSIX troubleshooting guide. - Try launching Claude again. If it still will not open, note the exact error message and when it occurred before making further changes.
- Check the deployment log. In Event Viewer, open
Applications and Services Logs → Microsoft → Windows → AppxDeployment-Server → Operational. Review events at the time of the failed update or launch and preserve the relevant error details. The log can help diagnose package deployment; it does not repair the app. A successful registration event alone does not prove that Claude can launch—the reporter in the July 22 case said manual re-registration completed while the launch failure remained. Microsoft documents the deployment log location. - Choose Repair before Reset, if Windows offers those options. Open Claude’s Windows app settings and select Advanced options, then try Repair. If Repair does not help, decide whether to use Reset only after reading the data-loss distinction below. Microsoft’s MSIX Repair and Reset guidance.
- Restart Windows if the app remains blocked. Restarting reportedly recovered the single Claude installation described above, but the report does not establish that it will work in other cases. If the problem returns, keep the error and deployment-log details and contact current Claude support rather than repeatedly killing processes or deleting app data.
What each option does—and what it risks
| Action | Data impact | What it can tell or do | Claude-specific evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| End remaining processes | Low disruption; no data removal is described in Microsoft’s guidance. | Addresses a package-in-use condition by closing app instances or background processes. | Not shown to fix the reported case; the user said ending the visible process did not restore launch. Issue report; Microsoft guidance. |
| Inspect AppxDeployment-Server Operational log | Diagnostic step; it does not itself change app data. | Shows package deployment events and may expose an error relevant to the failed operation. Microsoft guidance. | The reported manual re-registration completed without resolving launch. Issue report. |
| Repair | Microsoft says Repair attempts to refresh the installation while retaining app data. | Less destructive option to try before Reset. Microsoft does not promise it will fix this Claude failure. Microsoft guidance. | No Claude-specific success is established. |
| Reset | Permanently removes app data, including preferences and sign-in details, according to Microsoft. | Reinstalls the app; use only after considering the data loss. Microsoft guidance. | No Claude-specific success is established. |
| Restart Windows | No app-data deletion is described in the report. | Restarts Windows and may clear a condition that survives process termination; no general mechanism is confirmed. | Reported to restore one installation, not a guaranteed remedy. Issue report. |
For IT-managed Claude installations
Anthropic’s Windows deployment guidance says Claude Desktop’s MSIX is available for x64 and arm64. It distinguishes per-user installation with Add-AppxPackage from machine-wide provisioning with Add-AppxProvisionedPackage. Anthropic says Claude checks for updates approximately every four hours by default and applies them automatically, independently of the version assigned by an MDM. Anthropic’s deployment guide.

- Complete Windows Repair Toolkit – includes tools to remove viruses, reset passwords, recover lost files, and fix boot errors like BOOTMGR or NTLDR missing.
- Reinstall or Upgrade Windows – perform a clean reinstall of Windows 7 (32bit and 64bit), 10, or 11 (amd64 + arm64) to restore performance and stability. (Windows license not included.). Includes Full Driver Pack – ensures hardware compatibility after installation. Automatically detects and installs drivers for most PCs.
- Premium Hardware & Reliable Support – built with high-quality flash chips for speed and longevity. TECH STORE ON provides responsive customer support within 24 hours.
Administrators coordinating updates should choose one update owner. An MDM can disable Claude’s automatic updates with the disableAutoUpdates policy and deliver versions on its own schedule; alternatively, Claude can manage versions while the MDM detects that a sufficiently recent package is installed. These are deployment-management choices, not end-user repair steps. Anthropic’s deployment guide.
