To reduce premature “done” reports from Claude Code, define what completion means before it starts: name the requirements it must meet, the checks that can verify them, and what to report if a check cannot be run. Mahnoor Faisal says this change improved her results, but her account is personal experience—not a controlled measurement showing how much it helps across projects.

Why a clear finish line helps

A feature that appears to work is not proof that every part of a request is complete. An agent may implement the most visible behavior while missing a requirement, an error case, or a regression elsewhere. Anthropic’s prompting guidance says Claude responds well to clear, explicit instructions and recommends checking work against stated criteria. Those instructions can make expectations clearer, but they cannot guarantee a correct result.

The practical shift is to make completion depend on observable evidence rather than the agent’s own sense of progress. Tell Claude Code what outcomes matter, ask it to check them, and have it distinguish between checks that passed, failed, or were not possible.

Choose checks that fit the task

There is no universal verification list for every repository. Select checks based on the request, the project’s tools, and the behavior at risk. Useful examples include:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Requirements: compare the finished change with each material part of the original request.
  • Build and tests: run the relevant project build and tests when they exist and apply to the change.
  • Requested behavior: exercise the user flow end to end when the available tools allow it.
  • Errors and regressions: inspect relevant output for errors and check nearby behavior that the change could affect.

These checks provide evidence only for what they actually cover. A passing build does not, by itself, establish that a user flow works; a test suite cannot verify behavior it does not exercise. If a check is unavailable or out of scope, the handoff should say so rather than imply it passed.

Use a checklist or an outcome goal

Approach Use it when What to specify
Checklist The required verification steps are known. List the relevant requirements and checks, such as a particular test, build, or user-flow exercise.
Outcome goal The desired end state is clear, but the exact steps to reach it are not. Describe the observable result that counts as success. Faisal describes Claude Code’s /goal as one way to express such an end condition.

These approaches solve different planning problems: a checklist names known steps, while an outcome goal leaves the route open but makes the destination explicit. Neither replaces checking whether the result meets the request.

A prompt pattern for evidence-backed completion

Adapt the checks to your project; do not ask for commands or browser testing that the repository does not support or the agent cannot perform.

Before reporting this task complete, compare the result with every requirement in my request. Run the relevant project build and tests, exercise the requested behavior end to end where the available tools allow, and inspect relevant output for errors or regressions. Fix failures and repeat the affected checks. In your handoff, list the checks you ran, their results, and any checks you could not perform.

This is an adapted prompt, not a quotation from Anthropic or Faisal. For a small change, narrow it to the checks that matter; for a broader feature, make the acceptance conditions explicit enough to assess individually.

What to do when a check fails

  1. Ask Claude Code to identify which requirement or check failed and show the relevant evidence.
  2. Have it fix the issue rather than treating the failed check as completion.
  3. Repeat the affected checks after the fix. If that change could affect another tested area, rerun the checks needed to cover that risk.
  4. Require a handoff that separates passed checks from failures and checks it could not perform.

A confident completion summary is not evidence on its own. The useful handoff names what ran and what happened, so you can judge how much of the requested behavior was actually verified.

Completion rules are different from execution limits

Claude Code’s CLI reference documents --max-turns for limiting agentic turns in print mode and a plan permission mode. These controls can bound or stage execution, but they do not define acceptable quality or prove that acceptance criteria were met. Set the finish line separately from controls on how the agent works.

What “dramatically better” does—and does not—mean

Faisal reports that checklists, /goal, and explicit verification improved her results and helped catch issues before they reached her. Her article does not provide a controlled comparison, defect count, or independently reproduced quality measurement. Treat “dramatically better” as her description of her own experience, not a quantified or universal promise.
