Claude Code is the better fit if you want a terminal-based agent to work across files; an Obsidian AI plugin is usually better if you want vault-aware search and AI tools inside your notes app. You can also combine them: some plugins connect Claude Code to Obsidian or expose vault-specific tools to it. There is no documented independent comparison proving one approach works better overall, so choose based on interface, retrieval needs, write controls, setup, and where your note content is processed.
Claude Code and Obsidian plugins solve different parts of the problem
Claude Code is Anthropic’s terminal-based agent. Obsidian is a note-taking environment; its community plugins can add an in-app AI interface, vault-specific retrieval, or a connection to an external agent. That distinction matters: Claude Code can operate on files, but Obsidian-aware tools may give it richer access to the vault’s links and metadata.
They are not necessarily alternatives. Obsidian’s Copilot plugin listing describes support for connecting an existing Claude Code installation. Code Workbench documents local integrations that expose Obsidian-aware operations, while Companion for Claude describes Claude Code as a desktop agent backend. These are examples of ways to combine the tools, not evidence that the combination is universally superior.

Choose based on how you work
Choose Claude Code directly for broader file work
Use Claude Code directly if you prefer a terminal workflow, want an agent that can work across files beyond your Obsidian vault, and are comfortable setting up and reviewing its permissions. Its general file access does not automatically provide Obsidian’s link-aware retrieval; add a suitable integration if backlinks, wikilinks, or vault metadata matter to the task.

Choose an Obsidian plugin for an in-app workflow
A plugin is a stronger fit when you want to ask questions from inside Obsidian, use the active note as context, or search with vault-specific features. For example, Code Workbench documents operations for backlinks, outgoing links, wikilink resolution, frontmatter, and ranked vault search. Its listing says full-text search inside note bodies is left to ripgrep, which Claude Code already runs. Those capabilities are specific to that plugin, not a feature of every Obsidian AI plugin.
Combine them when you want both interfaces and capabilities
A plugin can provide an Obsidian-facing workflow or vault-aware tools while Claude Code supplies the agent runtime. Copilot’s listing describes connecting an existing Claude Code installation; Companion documents Claude Code as a backend; and Code Workbench describes an integration with local vault tools. The trade-off is extra configuration and another set of permissions and data-routing choices to understand. Anthropic’s plugin help describes plugins that can run skills, sub-agents, hooks, and MCP servers on your computer, but those features alone do not provide Obsidian’s link-aware retrieval.

Check vault access and write permissions
Do not treat all plugins as having the same access model. Code Workbench says its vault tools are disabled by default and describes approval before write operations apply. Claude Vault Assistant says the tools allowed to the agent determine what it can do, and warns that adding command execution can allow arbitrary commands during a run.
For any setup, inspect which tools are enabled and whether the agent can only read notes, propose changes, or apply them. Read-only access, approval-gated edits, and unrestricted command execution carry different risks. These are descriptions of the plugins’ documented behavior, not an independent security audit.

Understand where prompts and notes are processed
“Local” can describe where a plugin runs without meaning that your notes stay on your device. Companion says prompts and attached vault context are sent according to the selected backend. Claude Vault Assistant says content Claude reads through the CLI is sent to Anthropic for processing.
If privacy is a deciding factor, check the selected model provider, endpoint, credentials, and what context the plugin sends. A local-model configuration may have a different data path, but verify the actual provider and endpoint instead of inferring them from the plugin’s location.

Check account and cost requirements before setup
Requirements vary by plugin and provider. Copilot’s current listing says the plugin can be used without a Copilot license when you use an existing agent account, a provider key, or a local model; the provider may still charge separately. The listing directs users to its pricing page and in-app model picker for current entitlements, so confirm those details before relying on a particular feature. Do not assume another plugin has the same account requirements or costs.
What the available documentation establishes
The product and plugin documentation describes features and configurations, but does not establish an independent winner or a controlled comparison of retrieval accuracy, setup time, or outcomes for personal knowledge bases. Plugin download counts, where displayed, are not a measure of comparative effectiveness. Treat the named integrations as options to evaluate against your own vault and workflow, not as a performance ranking.
