For a text-based diagram that belongs in a software project, Claude Code can help draft or edit its source as part of a coding workflow, but it is not documented here as a dedicated diagramming canvas. The right choice depends on whether your main artifact is an AWS infrastructure template or project-maintained diagram code.
What is different about these two workflows?
This is not a comparison of two equivalent diagramming applications. Infrastructure Composer is an AWS-specific visual builder tied to application resources and CloudFormation infrastructure. Claude Code is a project-oriented coding agent; using it to work on diagram source is a code-centered approach, not a documented first-party diagram mode.
AWS describes Infrastructure Composer as a way to visually compose and configure AWS applications and visualize CloudFormation infrastructure. Its canvas and template views connect visual resource work with infrastructure code. Anthropic’s documentation instead describes launching Claude Code in a development project and using it through command-line workflows.
How AWS Infrastructure Composer represents architecture
In its CloudFormation console mode, Infrastructure Composer provides cards that can be dragged onto a visual canvas, configured, and connected. The interface includes a resource palette and list, canvas and template views, a properties panel, groups, zoom controls, and an arrange function. AWS also documents opening and saving template files, local synchronization, and canvas export through a menu; interface details can change over time.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Connections depend on the resource card
Enhanced component cards have connector ports, and users can represent relationships between them by dragging from port to port; the canvas displays these connections as lines. Standard infrastructure-as-code resource cards do not have connector ports. Their event-driven relationships are specified in the application template and detected for display as dotted lines. So the canvas is not simply a free-form drawing surface: what it shows depends partly on the resource type and the underlying template.
What the canvas is useful for
AWS says visualizing templates can help identify gaps and areas for improvement in templates and architecture. Because the canvas is tied to AWS resources and CloudFormation, it is a natural fit when the diagramming task is also infrastructure modeling or inspection. It should not be treated as proof that a design is correct or ready to deploy; the available documentation does not establish that the visual representation automatically validates an architecture.

How Claude Code fits into diagram work
Anthropic documents Claude Code as software installed and launched from a development project. Its CLI supports interactive use, print mode, project directories, tool permissions, and output settings. That makes a code-centered diagram workflow plausible: ask the agent to draft or revise text-based diagram source in the project, then review the resulting file with the project’s usual tools and checks.
That use is an application of a coding agent, not an official diagram feature claim. The documentation reviewed does not establish a dedicated Claude Code diagram canvas, a particular diagram language, a visual AWS resource palette, or automatic AWS architecture validation. If your workflow depends on those features, do not assume Claude Code provides them simply because it can work with project files.

Which one should you use?
| Need | Better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Visually design or inspect an AWS application and its CloudFormation resources | AWS Infrastructure Composer | AWS documents it as a visual way to compose AWS applications, with a canvas linked to templates and resource relationships. |
| Keep a text-based diagram source in a software project and have an agent help edit it | Claude Code, as a code-centered workflow | Claude Code works in development projects and supports command-line interaction; diagram authoring is an inferred use, not a documented dedicated mode. |
| Get an empirically proven faster or universally better diagramming tool | Neither can be selected on that basis here | The documentation supports a workflow comparison, not a performance ranking or productivity benchmark. |
These recommendations follow from each product’s documented purpose; they are not the result of a comparative speed test. In either workflow, review the diagram against the actual architecture rather than treating an agent-produced artifact or a canvas view as authoritative by itself.

No. AWS says the product was formerly known as Application Composer; current AWS documentation calls it AWS Infrastructure Composer. Search for the current name when looking for product documentation or interface guidance.
