A Claude Code theme changes the colors Claude Code renders; it does not change your terminal emulator’s palette. Use /theme to pick a built-in or custom Claude Code theme, configure the terminal separately, or use a palette converter to keep multiple apps aligned. UI mods go much further than themes: they can change behavior as well as interface elements, and run with Claude Code’s access to your machine.
Claude Code theme vs. terminal theme: what changes?
These are two separate color layers. Claude Code controls its own interface colors; your terminal application controls the colors used by the terminal window. Claude Code’s theme picker can match its light or dark appearance to the terminal’s detected background, but selecting a Claude Code theme does not set the terminal palette. Choose a built-in theme
Run /theme to open the theme picker, or open /config and select the theme setting. Choose auto when matching Claude Code’s light/dark appearance to the detected terminal background is enough. This coordinates appearance, not the terminal’s individual color values.
How to use a custom Claude Code theme
Claude Code supports JSON themes in ~/.claude/themes/. The documented format uses a theme name, a base theme, and token overrides. Unspecified colors fall back to the selected base.

Create and select a theme
- Create a JSON file in
~/.claude/themes/. If the themes directory did not exist when Claude Code started, restart Claude Code once after creating the first theme file. - Set
nameto the theme’s display name,baseto one of the supported bases, andoverridesto the color-token values you want to change. - In Claude Code, run
/themeand select your custom theme. Theme files reload when they change.
Supported base values are dark, light, dark-daltonized, light-daltonized, dark-ansi, and light-ansi. Documented color formats include #rrggbb, #rgb, rgb(r,g,b), ansi256(n), and ansi:<name>. Claude Code ignores unknown tokens and invalid color values.
Ways to match Claude Code to your other apps
Pick the light or dark mode that fits your terminal, then decide whether you want to adjust Claude Code manually, start with a community palette, or generate colors from a shared scheme. Community collections offer palette inspiration, not evidence of which themes are most used or most accessible.

Community palettes
The Claude Code theme collection lists palettes including Dracula, Tokyo Night, Nord, Catppuccin, Gruvbox, One Dark Pro, Rosé Pine, Solarized Light, and GitHub Light. The repository describes its options as popular, but provides no adoption figures or ranking. It states compatibility with Claude Code 2.1.118+; treat that as the repository’s compatibility claim, which can change as Claude Code releases evolve.
Tinted: one palette across several applications
Tinted Claude Code converts Base16, Base24, and Tinted8 schemes into Claude Code theme JSON. Its repository documents both a static theme file and a Node-based generator, and describes using schemes with terminal and editor themes. The Node option computes shimmer and diff colors; static output omits some calculated values. The repository says custom themes require Claude Code 2.1.118 or later.

Check contrast in the places you rely on
A palette’s name does not establish that it is accessible for your display or use. Inspect foreground/background contrast and make sure diff colors, status indicators, and other distinctions you depend on remain legible. If a shared scheme still leaves Claude Code’s interface hard to read, override the relevant tokens in your custom theme.
What Claude Code UI mods do
Themes adjust colors; mods can alter behavior and interface elements. In an announcement dated October 1, 2026, Anthropic described mods as TypeScript functions shipped in plugins. They can hook events and run before, after, instead of, or around an event, with targets for the CLI, desktop app, or both. Multiple mods that hook the same event run in load order. Examples of what mods can do include rewriting prompts, blocking or retrying tool calls, approving or denying permission requests, redacting tool output, and changing or adding UI. Anthropic also describes uses such as CI/CD status, production safeguards, and audit logging. A mod therefore needs more scrutiny than a color theme: it may affect what the tool does, not just how it looks.

Are Claude Code mods safe to install?
Anthropic’s central warning is: “Mods run with the same access to your machine as Claude Code itself.” They are not sandboxed. Install them only from sources you trust, and assess the code and permissions before enabling a mod that can affect tool calls or permission handling.
Team and Enterprise controls
Anthropic says Team and Enterprise administrators can allow or block plugin marketplaces through admin settings. Its announcement also describes a built-in sec-default mod that loads first on Team and Enterprise plans and on machines with managed settings. Administrators can load their own mods first; Anthropic says to include sec-default in that case to retain its restrictions. See Anthropic’s managed settings documentation.
For an individual setup, use a theme file when the goal is visual consistency. Consider a mod only when you need behavior or UI changes beyond color, and review its source and trust implications before installing it.
