On March 31, 2026, a Claude Code npm release reportedly included a debugging file that pointed to a substantial archive of source code. Anthropic described the incident as a release-packaging mistake—not an intrusion—and said no sensitive customer data or credentials were exposed. The available reporting does not establish that Anthropic’s entire codebase or all of Claude’s systems were exposed.
How the Claude Code source was exposed
Source maps help connect compiled, production-ready JavaScript back to the original source used to build it. They are useful for debugging, but publishing one can reveal source material if it contains or points to that material. According to technical reporting by Rafter, Claude Code version 2.1.88 included a file named cli.js.map in its npm package; the map pointed to a ZIP archive on Anthropic cloud storage. Rafter’s account says the map was not excluded from the published package. Rafter’s technical account.
Axios and TechRadar likewise described a debugging or source-map file in the npm release as the route to the archive. Their reporting supports a published-build-artifact exposure, not a claim that an outside attacker broke into Anthropic’s systems. Axios’s March 31 report; TechRadar’s April 1 report.
How much code was reportedly involved?
Published counts differ slightly, so they are best treated as reported estimates rather than an independently audited inventory.

| Publisher and date | Reported scale |
|---|---|
| Axios, March 31, 2026 | Nearly 2,000 files and 500,000 lines |
| TechRadar, April 1, 2026 | About 1,900 TypeScript files and more than 500,000 lines |
| Rafter, April 5, 2026 | Roughly 1,900 files and 512,000 TypeScript lines |
The figures describe a large body of source material, but they do not by themselves prove that every file was canonical, complete, or part of Claude Code’s full source repository. A secondary analysis specifically cautions that community reconstructions may not be perfect or complete. Claude AI Dev’s analysis.
What the leaked material reportedly contained
News and technical accounts described implementation details, including prompts, tool definitions, permission logic, dependency names, and internal feature flags. These are descriptions of the reported material, not details confirmed in Anthropic’s quoted statement. Rafter’s account.

Axios reported that some flags appeared to relate to capabilities that were built but not shipped at the time: a persistent assistant that could continue working in the background, and a way to review recent sessions and carry learnings across conversations. Axios also reported that remote-control capabilities had already rolled out by the time of its article. A feature flag or code path indicates implementation work; it does not establish that a feature was released to users, nor does this account establish what happened to those unreleased capabilities later. Axios.
What Anthropic said—and what the reports do not establish
Axios quoted an unnamed Anthropic spokesperson saying: “This was a release packaging issue caused by human error, not a security breach. We’re rolling out measures to prevent this from happening again.” The outlet also quoted the company as saying: “Earlier today, a Claude Code release included some internal source code. No sensitive customer data or credentials were involved or exposed,” Axios. TechRadar relayed the company’s characterization as well. These are company statements reported by news outlets; the available reporting does not include an independent forensic audit or a public Anthropic incident report.

The source-code exposure alone does not establish that model weights, training data, every internal service, or every Claude product was exposed. Nor does it prove that copies circulating online are complete or authentic. Those broader claims go beyond what the reporting documents. Claude AI Dev.

A release can expose more than its obvious executable files. Debugging artifacts, generated bundles, archives, and package contents all form part of the release surface if they are published or made reachable by a published file. In this case, the reported chain ran from a source map included in an npm package to a source archive. The practical release-engineering lesson is to verify the contents and reachable references of release artifacts before publishing them—not just the application code intended for end users.
