Claude can turn a Slack mention into a remote Claude Code session. Mention @Claude with a coding request, and—when the request is recognized as a coding task—it runs on Claude Code on the web, uses the repositories you have authenticated there, posts progress in Slack, and links to the finished session and pull request. This requires Claude Code on the web access and a properly installed Slack integration.
What the Claude Code Slack integration does
The integration is an entry point for remote coding work, not merely a chatbot that drafts a Slack reply. A request such as “fix the failing login test in the authenticated repository and open a pull request” can start a Claude Code session at claude.com/code. Claude returns status updates in the originating Slack thread, then provides a link to the completed session and a direct pull-request link when one is created.
Anthropic describes the workflow as: “Claude Code users can ask @Claude to handle coding tasks and it will run them remotely, providing updates when completed.” See Anthropic’s Claude for Slack page and its Claude Code and Slack announcement.
What it does not do
- A Slack mention does not give Claude access to every repository in your company.
- It does not run Claude Code on your local computer; the coding session is remote through Claude Code on the web.
- It is not an independently tested guarantee of bug-fix accuracy, speed, or productivity. Official sources document the workflow mechanics, not outcome benchmarks.
Prerequisites and current availability
- Claude Code on the web: Coding-task routing requires access to Claude Code on the web.
- Slack app installation: An authorized workspace member must install the Claude app and grant its requested Slack access.
- Connected Claude account: After installation, connect your Claude account from Slack’s Apps area.
- Workspace approval: Depending on workspace policy, an owner, administrator, integration administrator, or other authorized member may need to approve installation and select which workspaces can use it.
- Authenticated repositories: The repositories available for a session are the ones authenticated to Claude Code on the web for your account or organization.
Naming and plan access are changing. Anthropic’s help documentation says the earlier Claude in Slack experience switched to Claude Tag on August 3, 2026, and identifies Claude Tag as beta on Team and Enterprise plans. Anthropic also describes a Slack connector for bringing Slack context into Claude on Team or Enterprise, while other product material refers more generally to paid-plan availability. These are related but distinct experiences, so confirm the current plan, beta, and rollout terms in the Claude Tag help article and Slack’s setup documentation before deployment.

Install and connect Claude in Slack
- Open the Slack Marketplace installation flow for the Claude app.
- Have an authorized member approve the installation and grant the requested Slack permissions. Enterprise organizations may install at the organization level and choose the workspaces or access scope.
- In Slack, open the Apps area, select Claude, and connect the Claude account that has the required access.
- Confirm that the connected account can use Claude Code on the web and that the intended repositories are authenticated there.
- Use a direct message with Claude for a private request, or add Claude to a channel when the work should be visible to collaborators.
Exact labels and approval screens can vary by Slack workspace policy and by the current Claude rollout. If you cannot install the app, ask a workspace owner or administrator to perform the installation or approve it.
How to start a coding task from Slack
- In a channel or thread where the task belongs, type @Claude and describe the desired change.
- Name the repository, branch or relevant component when you know it, and include the expected behavior, error message, test command, and acceptance criteria.
- For a focused request, link the specific Slack message, issue, design, or other resource Claude should use.
- Submit the mention. If Claude recognizes the request as coding work and your account is eligible, it routes the task to a remote Claude Code session.
- Watch the originating thread for progress updates. When the run finishes, follow the session link to inspect the work and use the pull-request link for review when a PR was opened.
Example request
@Claude In the authenticated payments-api repository, fix the timeout handling in the checkout webhook. Reproduce it with the existing integration test, run the relevant test suite, and open a pull request describing the change. Do not modify database schemas.

Specific constraints reduce ambiguity. Ask Claude to inspect or propose a change when you do not want it to edit code, and never include secrets, tokens, or credentials in a Slack message.
What Slack context Claude can see
Slack documents bounded context for mentions:
| Where you mention Claude | Recent context available | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Channel mention | 20 most recent messages | Older requirements may be outside the automatic context window. |
| Thread mention | 50 most recent replies | A thread preserves more task discussion and keeps the response with the work. |
These are product context limits, not performance measurements. If a key requirement is older or outside those limits, paste it into the request or include a link to the specific Slack message or resource. Avoid assuming that Claude can search every historical conversation or private channel.

How repository access and pull requests work
Repository selection
Anthropic says the remote session selects from repositories you authenticated to Claude Code on the web. A Slack mention therefore acts as a request and context handoff; it does not expand repository permissions. If the target repository is missing, authenticate it in Claude Code on the web and verify that your organization allows the connection before retrying.
Progress and handoff
Claude posts progress updates back to the Slack thread. The completion message includes a link to the Claude Code session for review and, when the workflow creates one, a direct pull-request link. A pull request is a handoff for human review—not proof that the change is correct or ready to merge. Inspect the diff, test results, permissions, and security impact using your normal review process.

Slack-triggered coding versus starting Claude Code directly
| Decision point | Start from Slack | Start directly in Claude Code on the web |
|---|---|---|
| Conversation context | Uses the mention’s bounded channel or thread context: 20 recent channel messages or 50 recent thread replies, plus links you provide. | Does not automatically inherit that Slack conversation; you supply the task context in Claude Code. |
| Repository scope | Repositories authenticated to Claude Code on the web; a Slack mention grants no additional repository access. | Repositories authenticated to Claude Code on the web. |
| Workspace controls | Requires Claude app installation, Slack permissions, account connection, and any administrator approval. | Requires Claude Code access and its account or organization controls. |
| Status and handoff | Progress appears in the Slack thread, with links to the session and, when created, the pull request. | Work and status are managed in the Claude Code interface rather than a Slack thread. |
| Rollout considerations | Claude Tag naming, beta status, and plan eligibility can change. | Availability still depends on current Claude Code access, independent of Slack installation. |
Use Slack when the requirement already lives in a team conversation and collaborators need visible updates. Start directly in Claude Code when the task is private, requires a longer technical brief, or your workspace has not approved the Slack app.

Claude does not respond to the mention
- Confirm the app is installed in that workspace and that you mentioned the correct Claude app.
- Check whether an administrator must approve the integration or restrict its channels.
- Verify that your Claude account is connected in Slack and eligible for the current Claude Tag or Claude for Slack rollout.
The request receives a normal answer instead of starting coding
- State the coding action explicitly: repository, files or component, desired behavior, tests, and whether a pull request is wanted.
- Confirm that the connected account has Claude Code on the web access; Slack chat access alone is not sufficient for coding-task routing.
The repository is unavailable
- Authenticate the repository in Claude Code on the web.
- Check organization permissions, repository visibility, and whether the authenticated account is the one connected to Slack.
- Do not paste credentials into Slack to work around an access problem.
Claude missed an important requirement
- Keep the request in a thread and restate the requirement directly.
- Include a link to the authoritative Slack message or external resource.
- Remember that only the documented recent-message window is automatically supplied.
No pull-request link appears
The documented workflow provides a pull-request link when a PR is created. If none appears, open the linked Claude Code session to see whether the task stopped, tests failed, or the run produced changes without opening a PR; then follow your repository’s normal branch and review process.

Security and review checklist
- Obtain workspace and repository-owner approval before enabling the integration for production code.
- Limit repository authentication to the projects and accounts the workflow actually needs.
- Keep secrets, access tokens, customer data, and incident details out of Slack prompts unless your organization explicitly permits that handling.
- Review the app’s Slack permissions and the organization’s retention and compliance settings.
- Require a human review of every generated diff, test result, dependency change, and pull request before merge.
- Record which account, repository, and branch the remote session used when the change matters operationally.
Bottom line
Claude Code’s Slack integration is best understood as a Slack-to-remote-session bridge: mention Claude, provide a precise coding task, and Claude Code on the web works against repositories already authenticated to your account. It can keep collaborators updated in the thread and hand back a session and pull-request link, but access, context, plan eligibility, beta status, and administrative approval all matter. Verify the current Claude Tag and Slack requirements before rolling it out.
