To pick up where you left off, open a terminal in the relevant project directory and run claude --continue (or claude -c). To return to a particular conversation, use claude --resume <session-id-or-name> (or claude -r). Keep project-wide guidance in a CLAUDE.md file and capture the immediate task state in a short handoff note. A resumed conversation, lasting project context, and a current-state note solve different problems.
Continue the latest conversation or resume a specific one
Anthropic’s Claude Code CLI reference documents two ways to return to conversational work. Use --continue when the latest conversation in the current directory is the one you need; use --resume when you want to identify a particular saved session.
| Need | Command | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Continue the most recent conversation in this directory | claude --continue or claude -c |
Interactive continuation skips sessions created with claude -p or the Agent SDK, and sessions whose first prompt was /loop. The reference says claude -p --continue includes print, SDK, and /loop sessions. |
| Resume a known conversation | claude --resume <session-id-or-name> or claude -r <session-id-or-name> |
In an interactive terminal, omit the identifier to open a session picker. Session-ID lookup checks the current project and Git worktrees, then other projects on that machine. |
Session lookup and background-session behavior have changed in recent CLI releases, so an old command guide may not describe the version installed on your machine. If the expected session is missing, verify that you started from the intended directory, check your CLI version, and consult the current reference.
Resume work without trusting a stale transcript
Resuming a conversation restores a thread, but it does not prove that the repository is still in the same state. Branches may have changed, files may have been edited elsewhere, and a note written earlier may no longer describe the working tree.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Start in the intended checkout. Open a terminal in the project directory where you plan to work.
- Choose the conversation. Run
claude --continuefor the latest conversation in that directory, orclaude --resume <session-id-or-name>for a specific one. - Ask Claude to verify before acting. For example: “Read the handoff note and inspect the current branch, diff, and relevant files. Verify what is still true, then continue with the next action.” This is suggested wording, not a special CLI command.
This check matters especially when a session search finds work associated with multiple Git worktrees. The session may be discoverable across worktrees, while the checkout you are currently in can contain different code or changes.
Write a concise handoff note for the immediate task
A transcript can be long, and a resumed session may need a quick account of what is done and what remains. A handoff note is practical workflow advice, not a required Claude Code feature or an Anthropic-prescribed template. Put it somewhere the next session can access, such as the repository when appropriate, and include:

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Goal: The outcome the task is meant to achieve.
- Current state: What is complete and what remains.
- Changes: The files or components touched.
- Verification: The checks actually run and their results. Clearly mark checks that have not been run.
- Decisions and constraints: Choices that should not be reopened without a reason.
- Next action: The first concrete step to take after resuming.
Keep the note factual and compact. Tell Claude to compare it with the current branch, diff, and relevant files; do not treat the note as proof that code or tests are unchanged.

Claude Code’s memory documentation explains that “Each Claude Code session begins with a fresh context window.” In other words, a new session does not begin with the previous conversation’s full context. Durable project guidance can make recurring expectations available without copying them into each new chat.

A project CLAUDE.md is written by you. It is a good place for shared architecture notes, coding standards, concrete build and test commands, and recurring workflows. Keep instructions specific and verifiable—for example, give the actual command to run rather than saying only “test changes.” The documentation says instruction files closer to the working directory load later in the concatenated context.
Claude Code also has auto memory, where Claude can record learnings and patterns such as preferences, corrections, or project details that are not readily derived from code. The memory guide and interactive-mode documentation distinguish this from user-written instructions: both can load at the start of a conversation, but they provide context rather than enforced configuration. Use settings or hooks for controls that must be enforced.

For repositories using AGENTS.md, the current memory guide describes when Claude Code reads it and when CLAUDE.md takes precedence. The guide says direct AGENTS.md reading requires Claude Code v2.1.277 or later and notes that other cases depend on configuration. Because this behavior is version-sensitive, check the current documentation and use /context to see what context is loaded.

Choose the right kind of context
| What you need to carry forward | Best starting point | Trade-off or check |
|---|---|---|
| The latest conversation in this directory | claude --continue |
Quick when the latest thread is the right one; interactive continuation has documented exclusions for some session types. |
| A particular earlier conversation | claude --resume <session-id-or-name> |
More targeted when you know the ID or name; lookup behavior can depend on CLI version. |
| Team guidance across future sessions | Project CLAUDE.md |
Durable, shareable context, but not an enforcement boundary. |
| The state and next step of today’s task | A brief handoff note | Makes the immediate status explicit; verify it against the live repository. |
