Claude Code mods let developers change how Claude Code handles prompts, tool calls, permissions, output, and parts of its interface. Anthropic announced the feature on October 1, 2026, for the Claude Code CLI and desktop app. A mod is a TypeScript function packaged in a plugin; unlike a simple settings tweak, it can intervene in an event or replace a built-in feature. Mods also run with Claude Code’s machine access and are not sandboxed, so only install code from sources you trust.

What Claude Code mods can change

Claude Code emits events such as tool calls, permission prompts, and interface rendering. A mod hooks an event and can act before or after it, wrap it, or substitute behavior. Anthropic says mods extend beyond the controls offered by ordinary hooks: they can rewrite event handling, add UI, and replace features.

  • Prompts: rewrite prompts before Claude receives them.
  • Tool calls: block, rewrite, or retry a call.
  • Permissions: approve or deny permission requests.
  • Tool output: redact sensitive information such as secrets.
  • Interface and features: change parts of the UI or replace/add features.

Anthropic’s example is /diff: its built-in implementation is a mod that users can disable through /plugin or replace with their own. The official catalog also lists built-in AGENTS.md support and sec-default. See Anthropic’s announcement and the official mods catalog.

How mods fit into Claude Code customization

Choose a customization method according to how much control the change needs. Settings and permission rules configure behavior; shell-command hooks run commands in response to events. A mod is loaded once, can keep state during a session, and can draw UI. Settings hooks instead pass JSON through standard input and output. Mods therefore suit changes that need richer event control or an interface, but they also require trusting more code and managing it as a plugin.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Mechanism Best suited to How it works
Settings and permission rules Configuring behavior and establishing permission boundaries Configuration in Claude Code settings
Shell-command hooks Running commands when specified events occur Commands receive event data as JSON over stdin/stdout
Mods Stateful event handling, UI, or replacing features TypeScript functions packaged in plugins and loaded into Claude Code

When several mods hook the same event, they run in load order: the first loaded sees the event first and receives the result last. That ordering matters when one mod changes what another expects to see.

Install only mods whose code you trust

Anthropic’s security warning is direct: “Mods run with the same access to your machine as Claude Code itself. They aren’t sandboxed, and you should only install mods from sources you trust, the same way you’d install any code on your computer.” Read the publisher’s code and provenance as you would for any software you run locally; a plugin package is not an isolation boundary.

For Team and Enterprise, an owner can allow or block plugin marketplaces in the admin console. On Claude API and third-party API plans, administrators push managed settings to users’ machines. Anthropic says the built-in sec-default mod loads first on Team and Enterprise plans and on machines with managed settings; it blocks risky actions such as mods overriding permission-deny rules. If administrators configure their own mods to load first, Anthropic says they should include sec-default to retain those restrictions.

Mods can support team workflows—for example, showing CI/CD pipeline status, asking for confirmation before commands touch production configuration, or auditing calls made by other mods. These are possible uses, not a claim that Anthropic ships those workflows as turnkey features.

Get started: version, plugin structure, and an example

Anthropic’s October 1, 2026 getting-started guide says Claude Code 2.1.287 or later is required and mods are on by default. Because Anthropic warns that the API can change between releases, treat that version floor as the guide’s requirement at publication, not a promise that the interface will remain stable. Use the type declarations generated for the Claude Code version that loads a mod as authoritative for that build. The guide is available at Getting started with Claude Code mods.

A typical plugin has three pieces:

  • .claude-plugin/plugin.json — the plugin manifest.
  • hooks/hooks.json — points Claude Code to a module and its hooks.
  • A JavaScript or TypeScript module — registers the event hooks.

The guide demonstrates Token Weather, a context-window display; Blast Radius, a review-and-hold interface for selected risky commands; and Replay Theater, a pane for reviewing edits from a turn. These are tutorial examples. Blast Radius illustrates an important boundary: inspecting command text can miss command substitution, aliases, or scripts, so it should not be treated as a permission system. Use permission rules for hard blocking.

When mods are the right choice

  • Use a mod when the change needs to rewrite event behavior, preserve session state, add UI, or replace a built-in feature.
  • Use settings or permission rules when you need configuration or an explicit permission boundary.
  • Use a shell-command hook when an event should trigger a command and richer state or UI is unnecessary.
  • For any plugin, weigh the needed control against the source’s trustworthiness and the deployment controls available to you.
