Schools can reduce students’ direct exposure to online AI by keeping use teacher-directed, working only with public or appropriately anonymized material, and reviewing any service before using it. That is not the same as proving a tool collects no data: even when students do not create accounts, the service may still collect, use, retain, or transmit information.
What “no student data collection” can—and cannot—mean
There is no basis here to certify an online AI service as collecting zero student data. A more practical goal is to avoid sending student identities, work, or confidential records to public-facing AI, while checking how a proposed service handles any information it receives. The U.S. Department of Education’s Student Privacy Policy Office recommends reviewing education technology privacy policies and terms of service; its model terms checklist is an evaluation aid, not a safety certification or legal opinion about a particular product (Department of Education privacy and education technology).
UNESCO’s 2023 Guidance for generative AI in education and research calls for privacy protection, age-appropriate use, and human-centered ethical validation. It warns: “The absence of national regulations on GenAI in most countries leaves the data privacy of users unprotected and educational institutions largely unprepared to validate the tools” (UNESCO guidance). Treat privacy review as part of deciding whether and how to use AI, not as a feature implied by the absence of student accounts.
Classroom alternatives that keep student input out of prompts
Use AI for teacher-directed preparation
A teacher can ask an AI service to draft questions, examples, lesson outlines, or differentiated explanations from public curriculum text, open educational resources, or other material that is appropriate to disclose. The teacher reviews and adapts the result before sharing it. This can avoid asking pupils to interact directly with a public service, but it does not establish that the teacher’s service has no data collection.

Do not put student names, identifiable assignments, individualized education program (IEP) information, behavior records, or other personal or confidential material into public-facing prompts. France’s Ministry of National Education says public-facing AI services may not guarantee that submitted data will not be reused, and advises entering only material that could be made public (France’s 2025 framework for AI use in education). This is French guidance, not a universal rule.
Demonstrate a tool without student accounts
If a school permits a service, a teacher can mediate a demonstration or preparation workflow rather than require each student to submit prompts or create an account. That reduces direct student disclosure; it does not answer what the service collects about the teacher, device, or session. France’s 2025 framework explicitly says students should not be asked to create personal accounts on public-facing AI services. That instruction applies to the French framework and should not be presented as a global legal standard.

Choose non-AI activities when they meet the learning goal
Teacher-created examples, peer discussion, paper-based practice, library resources, open educational materials, and ordinary classroom or learning-management materials may achieve the intended objective without a generative AI interaction. The choice should follow the lesson’s learning goal; the cited guidance does not establish that one of these methods is universally better than AI.
Consider local or offline AI only as a reviewed option
Running a model locally may be a procurement path for some schools, but local operation does not by itself prove privacy. Configuration, logging, maintenance, and data flows still need review. The cited sources do not compare local models or certify hardware as private, so evaluate a specific setup rather than treating “offline” as a guarantee.

How to assess an online service before classroom use
- Check whether students interact directly. Establish whether pupils need accounts, submit prompts, upload work, or otherwise provide input. A teacher-mediated workflow can reduce direct disclosure but is not a finding that the service collects no data.
- Review current terms and privacy policy. Determine what the service collects, how it uses information, whether it retains or transmits it, and whether submitted information may be reused. The Department of Education’s model terms-of-service checklist can help schools structure that review (Department of Education resource).
- Follow school and district review procedures. Use the institution’s current approval, contracting, and procurement requirements. The federal checklist is a decision framework, not approval of a vendor or a substitute for local policy.
- Check age-appropriateness and oversight. Consider whether the activity is appropriate for the learners and how a teacher will validate and supervise the output. UNESCO’s guidance emphasizes age-appropriate use and human-centered validation.
- Compare instructional value with simpler alternatives. Decide whether the proposed use adds value over teacher-created materials, discussion, print practice, or other available resources without introducing unnecessary data exposure.
What current guidance says—and where it applies
UNESCO: privacy and age-appropriate, human-centered use
UNESCO’s 2023 guidance addresses generative AI in education and research, calling for privacy protections and age limits for independent conversations with public generative AI tools. It also promotes human-centered validation. This is international guidance, not a replacement for the laws or policies that govern a particular school (UNESCO, 2023).
France: public-facing services and student accounts
France’s Ministry of National Education published its education AI use framework on June 13, 2025. It says public-facing services do not guarantee that submitted data will not be reused, advises using only material that could be made public, and says not to ask students to create personal accounts on those services. The framework also permits autonomous student use from classe de 4e; that is a France-specific rule, not a global age threshold (framework).

The ministry reported that more than 500 contributions informed the consultation held from January through May 2025 (consultation announcement).
Common Sense Media: teacher assistants still need safeguards
Common Sense Media’s 2025 assessment announcement covered Google Classroom’s Gemini Teacher Assistant, Khanmigo’s Teacher Assistant, Curipod, and MagicSchool. It reported moderate risk when tools lack training, oversight, and school integration. It also cautioned that tools generating individualized education plans or behavior plans lack the comprehensive data needed for such high-stakes documents and can show problematic bias (Common Sense Media assessment announcement). This is the organization’s finding, not a certification of every product’s current features or privacy practices.

Practical decision rule
- If the activity can be done with public materials and teacher review, keep student identities and records out of prompts.
- If a service will be used online, have the school review its current terms, privacy policy, data flows, age suitability, and required approvals before use.
- If direct student interaction or sensitive information is necessary, do not assume a no-account workflow solves the privacy question; follow the institution’s policy and applicable local requirements.
- If the AI adds little instructional value, choose a non-AI activity that meets the same objective.
