What is Old World?
Old World is a turn-based 4X strategy game developed by Mohawk Games and published by Hooded Horse. It places familiar empire-building—founding and expanding cities, gathering resources, researching technologies, and raising armies—in an ancient setting. Its defining twist is that you also guide a ruling family across generations.
The “Civilization meets Crusader Kings” comparison is useful shorthand, not a claim that the games play identically. The empire-building side remains central; family politics and relationships add another layer rather than replacing the strategy game with a dynasty simulator.
How do its dynasty and strategy systems work?
Rulers, heirs, and relationships
Members of the ruling family age, and succession means the empire’s leadership changes over time. You can arrange political marriages, educate heirs, choose advisors, and make decisions that affect personal relationships and diplomacy. Those choices connect the court to the broader work of governing and expanding an empire.

Orders make turns a resource-management problem
Actions draw on a shared pool of orders. Moving an important unit several times, for example, uses capacity that could have gone to other actions. The result is a turn-planning trade-off: you have to decide which moves matter most instead of treating every unit’s actions as independent.
Technologies vary between playthroughs
Technologies are presented as cards, making research choices less like following one fixed path every time. The available choices can vary between runs, adding variation to how an empire develops.

What was the reported Steam deal?
Notebookcheck reported on October 5, 2026, that Steam had discounted Old World by 90%, from $40 to about $4, with the offer scheduled to end October 8, 2026. The report did not specify an exact cutoff time. Because the stated sale window has passed, neither $4 nor the discount should be treated as the current price; check Steam for the present listing and regional price.
Notebookcheck also said the sale price matched the game’s previous all-time low, citing SteamDB. That is a claim relayed by the article, not an independently verified price-history check here. The report’s reception figures are similarly time-sensitive: it cited nearly 7,000 Steam reviews with 82% positive, and an 8/10 score from TestingBuddies, whose review year was not specified. Steam review counts and ratings can change.

Is Old World a good fit for you?
- Consider it if you want a turn-based empire-building game with ancient-history flavor and a ruling dynasty whose members and relationships matter.
- Expect a learning curve if you are new to strategy games with multiple interacting systems. Notebookcheck described the game as difficult for newcomers to learn, with an interface that can sometimes be confusing.
- Weigh presentation preferences if modern graphics are important to you: Notebookcheck characterized the visuals as dated. These are assessments reported by that publication, not firsthand testing.
- Check device compatibility before buying for handheld play. Notebookcheck reported that the game can be played on Steam Deck, but consult the current Steam listing for up-to-date compatibility details.
How it differs from other strategy games
Compared with a more conventional Civilization-style 4X, Old World puts more emphasis on family succession and personal relationships, while keeping expansion, research, and armies at its core. Compared with a dynasty-focused grand strategy game, its central frame is still building and managing an empire; court and family systems enrich that frame rather than becoming the only focus. Its shared orders pool also makes turn-by-turn action allocation an explicit constraint.
