The flaw let an attacker with access to a server administrator’s Plex account upload a malicious file through Camera Upload and make the server execute it. The LastPass connection is a separate, attributed claim: Plex told SecurityWeek that LastPass identified this vulnerability as the one exploited in its 2022 incident. CISA’s catalog entry establishes exploitation, but does not itself name LastPass.
What Plex vulnerability was linked to the LastPass hack?
The vulnerability is CVE-2020-5741, a deserialization flaw in Plex Media Server involving its Camera Upload feature. In its May 2020 advisory, the Plex Security Team said an attacker with access to the server administrator’s Plex account could upload a malicious file through Camera Upload and have the media server execute it. This was not described as an attack that required no account access: the attacker needed access to the administrator’s Plex account.
CISA’s KEV entry says the flaw was known to be exploited and describes the same account-access prerequisite and malicious-file execution. Its listed remediation was to apply updates according to the vendor’s instructions. CISA added the CVE on March 10, 2023, with a March 31, 2023 due date for the catalog action.
How did the Plex bug relate to the LastPass breach?
LastPass’s March 1, 2023 incident update said the second incident involved a threat actor targeting a senior DevOps engineer by exploiting vulnerable third-party software. The company said the activity delivered malware and ultimately enabled unauthorized access to cloud backups. LastPass’s December 22, 2022 notice reported that the actor copied account metadata and customer vault backups from cloud storage.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Plex later told SecurityWeek that it learned from LastPass that CVE-2020-5741 was the vulnerability exploited. That is Plex’s account of what LastPass told it; CISA’s KEV entry does not independently identify LastPass or establish the connection. Plex also said the fix had been available since May 7, 2020.
Was the Plex vulnerability patched?
Yes. Plex said it addressed CVE-2020-5741 in Plex Media Server version 1.19.3 in May 2020. The historical version is useful for identifying whether an installation predates the fix, but it is not a statement of the current Plex release number. The available sources do not establish today’s latest version.

What should Plex Media Server users do?
- Check the installed version. Compare it with Plex’s documented fix: version 1.19.3 addressed CVE-2020-5741. Do not treat that historical version as the recommended current release.
- Update Plex Media Server. Follow the vendor’s current update instructions for the operating system or installation method you use. CISA’s catalog action was to apply vendor updates; it does not provide a separate workaround in the cited entry.
- Review administrator-account access. Because exploitation required access to the server administrator’s Plex account, check who can access that account and secure it using Plex’s account-security guidance.
If you are assessing the old LastPass incident, keep the reported effects distinct from the Plex patch advice. LastPass said the copied vault backups included unencrypted information such as website URLs and encrypted sensitive fields such as usernames and passwords. Those encryption and exposure details are LastPass’s description of the incident, not a conclusion drawn from CISA’s Plex entry.
