A planet orbiting a single star circles one star; a circumbinary planet circles both stars in a binary pair. The distinction describes the planet’s orbit—not its size, composition, or whether it could support life. In other words, a planet can orbit two stars, but it orbits the pair as a system rather than switching between the stars.

How the two kinds of orbits differ

Feature Planet orbiting a single star Circumbinary planet
What the planet orbits One star Both stars in a binary pair
What the orbit encloses One star The two stars, which orbit each other
Possible appearance of the sky One host star Potentially two suns, depending on viewpoint and visibility
Transit geometry A planet may pass in front of its host star from our line of sight A planet may pass in front of either moving star; the stars can also eclipse each other when the system is aligned for observation

“Two suns” is a familiar shorthand, but “two stars” is more precise. Whether both stars would be visible in a planet’s sky depends on the system and the viewer’s location.

What makes a planet circumbinary?

In a binary system, two stars orbit a shared center of mass. A circumbinary planet follows an orbit around that pair, enclosing both stars. It does not orbit one star and then the other separately. NASA describes Kepler-16 b as a planet orbiting two stars and uses “circumbinary” for this arrangement: NASA/JPL’s Kepler-16 b discovery announcement.

Why Kepler-16 b is the classic example

NASA/JPL announced Kepler-16 b on September 15, 2011, describing it as the first unambiguous circumbinary planet detection by Kepler. Kepler found it in a system where the two stars also eclipse one another, and the planet’s transits provided evidence that a third body orbited both stars. The announcement explains the discovery: NASA/JPL’s Kepler-16 b release.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Kepler-16 b is often compared visually to Tatooine because two stars are associated with the system. That comparison is about the possibility of a two-star sky, not an Earth-like world. NASA describes Kepler-16 b as a gas giant about Saturn’s size; it is not a planet with a solid surface for a person to stand on. See NASA Science’s Kepler-16 b overview.

Kepler-16 b by the catalog numbers

NASA Science’s Kepler-16 b catalog lists a radius of 0.7538 Jupiter radii, a mass of 0.333 Jupiter masses, and an orbital period of 228.8 days. These are catalog values for Kepler-16 b, accessed October 4, 2026, and may be revised; they are not typical values for circumbinary planets. The source is the NASA Science exoplanet catalog entry.

Why circumbinary planet transits can happen at irregular intervals

When a planet crosses a star from our line of sight, it can briefly dim the system’s light. In a circumbinary system, the two stars move around one another as the planet moves around both. The planet can cross either star, and the changing positions of the stars and planet mean transits may not recur at regular, clocklike intervals.

Kepler-16 is aligned so that its stars eclipse one another as seen from Earth. NASA/JPL’s discovery account describes transit-like dimmings at irregular intervals; interpreting those events alongside the binary stars’ motion helped establish that the planet circled both stars, rather than just one. See NASA/JPL’s account of the Kepler-16 discovery.

Can a binary system have more than one planet?

Yes. A binary pair can host multiple circumbinary planets. On August 27, 2012, NASA announced Kepler-47 as the first transiting circumbinary system identified with multiple planets orbiting two stars. The milestone is described in NASA’s Kepler-47 announcement.

Other examples include TOI-1338 b, which NASA Science identifies as the first circumbinary planet to emerge from TESS data in 2019, and Kepler-1647 b. NASA Goddard’s summary called Kepler-1647 b the largest then-known transiting circumbinary planet and gave it a 3.0-year orbital period; that “largest” description belongs to the historical summary and is not a current record claim. See NASA Science’s circumbinary planet overview and NASA Goddard’s Kepler-1647 b summary.

Does orbiting two stars make a planet habitable?

No. The word “circumbinary” tells you which stars the planet orbits; it does not tell you whether the planet has a suitable atmosphere, liquid water, or conditions for life. Kepler-16 b is a gas giant, so its Tatooine-like comparison should not be mistaken for evidence that it is habitable. NASA’s discussion of circumbinary planets describes the category and examples: NASA Science’s circumbinary planet overview.
