It can turn a toy or keyboard into an unusual instrument, but results are unpredictable: a technique that works on one device may not work on another. For hands-on experiments, use battery-powered devices only; do not modify anything that plugs into a wall outlet.
What is circuit bending?
Circuit bending is a form of electronic instrument making. Instead of building an instrument from scratch, a circuit bender explores an existing sound-making device’s circuitry and modifies it to produce new sounds or give the player more control over them. The results can be surprising, which is part of the creative appeal—and also why no particular modification is guaranteed to work.
The practice is associated with Reed Ghazala. Nicolas Collins’s history of hardware hacking recounts Ghazala’s accidental encounter with a toy amplifier that began making sounds after a circuit connection was disturbed in the late 1960s. Collins notes that Ghazala’s advocacy and instructional writing helped bring the practice to a wider audience in the 1990s. Collins describes this shift: “Then in the mid-1990s Reed Ghazala pushed serendipity back to the fore of electronic practice with his fervent advocacy of what he dubbed ‘circuit bending.’”
The Science Museum Group Journal’s account of circuit bending places it within DIY electronic music and describes practitioners modifying existing battery-operated devices and toys to change their sound. The term therefore describes an exploratory approach, not a single standard modification or a promise that every device can be altered successfully.

What devices can be circuit bent?
Common source categories include sound-making toys, electronic keyboards, and other found devices that generate sound. The Speak & Spell and Furby are examples often cited in accounts of the practice; they are cultural examples, not recommendations for a particular unit or proof that every version is suitable.
Different devices have different circuitry, so a bend or technique cannot be assumed to transfer from one model to another. Current model-specific bend points and the suitability of particular devices are not established by the sources cited here. Treat a device as an experiment, not as a guaranteed project.

How do you circuit bend a toy?
There is no universal step-by-step modification that applies to every toy. A tutorial by Nicolas Collins on finding a toy’s clock circuit gives a limited example of the kinds of supplies one exercise uses; it is not a complete kit or a guarantee that the method will work on another device.
Gather tools for the specific exercise
Collins’s toy clock-circuit tutorial lists a sound-making toy, small screwdrivers, and a fine-tip permanent marker. It also lists two alligator-clip leads and a 1–4 kΩ resistor as optional items for that exercise.

- 【Creative Design】This amazingly crafted handle and high-temperature resistant silicone protective cover are designed to keep your hands safe and comfortable while you work with your welding items. The insulating rubber materials used in the soldering iron are not only stylish but also improve safety.
Keep the experiment within the safety boundary
Use only battery-powered devices, and do not open or modify a device that plugs into a wall outlet. The T.A.C.O. Team Toy Hacking Handbook page hosted by Garnet Hertz’s Concept Lab warns: “Only experiment with devices that are battery powered. You can seriously hurt yourself if you modify things that plug into a wall outlet.” The warning appears on the project’s Toy Hacking Handbook page, identified as the February 2015 edition.
Expect device-specific results
Because the circuitry differs from device to device, the same exploration may produce different results—or none—on another toy. The tutorial is an example of an approach to learning, not a model-by-model instruction set. Do not treat an unfamiliar modification as safe simply because a similar experiment worked elsewhere.

What do you need to get started?
Start with a battery-powered sound-making device and only the tools required by the particular exercise you are following. For Collins’s clock-circuit exercise, that means the toy, small screwdrivers, and a fine-tip permanent marker, with alligator-clip leads and a 1–4 kΩ resistor optional. Those items are specific to that tutorial, not a definitive circuit-bending toolkit.

Is circuit bending safe?
There is one essential boundary in the cited beginner guidance: experiment only with battery-powered devices, not equipment that plugs into a wall outlet. The Toy Hacking Handbook warns that modifying mains-powered equipment can cause serious injury. This is a high-level boundary, not a complete electrical safety standard or device-specific inspection guide.
Battery power does not make every possible modification safe or successful. The sources cited here do not establish a universal inspection procedure, a safe bend for each model, or a guarantee that a device will remain functional. If you cannot identify whether a device is battery-powered, or do not understand the instructions for a particular experiment, do not proceed with that modification.
