Google removed the Google Lens icon from the Circle to Search bar in an October 2024 Google app interface rollout. Circle to Search still lets supported Android phones select and search content already on screen; what disappeared was the shortcut that opened live visual Google Lens from that bar. Google has not given a public reason for the removal or announced a restoration date.
What changed in Circle to Search?
Before the update, the Circle to Search bar included shortcuts for Google Search, voice search, Google Lens, song search and translation. Reports published October 11–12, 2024 said the Lens icon disappeared after song lookup was added. 9to5Google reported the change across stable and beta Google app versions following a server-side update, while Android Authority described the rollout as widespread. Neither report provided a user count or a quantified rollout percentage. 9to5Google and Android Authority documented the interface change.
The removal was a shortcut change, not the removal of Lens as a Google product or the end of Circle to Search. The former icon offered a quick, two-step route from Circle to Search into live visual Lens; it is that route that users lost.
Why did the Google Lens button disappear?
Google has not publicly explained why it removed the button. The timing followed the addition of song lookup to the Circle to Search bar, but that sequence does not establish the reason for the decision. No restoration date has been announced.

How do I use Google Lens after the update?
To open Lens directly, use one of the two alternatives reported by 9to5Google. Either provides a Lens entry point outside Circle to Search; neither puts the missing icon back in its bar.
- Use the Google Search widget: add the widget to the home screen and open Lens from Google Search.
- Use the standalone Google Lens app: download or open the Lens app and launch it from its app icon.
For instructions on the widget and app alternatives, see 9to5Google’s report.

What still works in Circle to Search?
On a supported phone, activate Circle to Search by holding the Home button or navigation handle, then circle, highlight, scribble on or tap the item on screen. Search results appear in the lower half of the display, so you can look up content without switching apps. Google documents screen selection, translation, AI Overviews for text and multisearch queries, and visual lookups for objects and products. Its product page also describes shopping for items found on screen and restaurant lookups. Capabilities can depend on availability and rollout. See Google’s Circle to Search help page and Circle to Search product information.
Google announced further Circle to Search capabilities on January 22, 2025: expanded visual AI Overviews and recognition of phone numbers, email addresses and URLs for one-tap actions. Those additions are separate from the removed Lens shortcut. Google’s announcement describes the changes.
