One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor most churches without a dedicated streaming operator, a hosted church streaming platform is the simpler starting point: it can combine live delivery, a viewer page, archives and support in one service. A self-hosted VPS can offer more control over ingest and routing, but the church takes on server setup, bandwidth costs, playback, security, monitoring and recovery. Compare what each option actually includes—not just its monthly headline price.
What are you choosing between?
A hosted church streaming platform is a packaged service. Depending on the provider and plan, it may include video ingest, delivery to viewers, an embedded website player, sermon archives, social simulcasting, captions or adaptive-bitrate playback. Features and allowances differ by plan, so check the current terms before choosing.
A self-hosted VPS is a virtual server that your church configures to receive and relay a stream. It may suit a technically capable team that needs control over ingest or routing. A basic RTMP relay is not automatically a full streaming service: viewer-ready playback, archive, captions and support are separate requirements.
Compare the full service, not just the monthly price
| What to compare | Hosted church platform | Self-hosted VPS relay |
|---|---|---|
| Setup and operation | The provider packages the service; setup and support vary by plan. | The church provisions and configures the server and software, then maintains it. |
| Delivery cost | Check the subscription, storage or bandwidth allowance, viewer-hours and overage terms. | Estimate server cost plus outbound traffic at the expected bitrate and concurrent audience. |
| Archive and replay | Some plans include live and on-demand media or archive storage; limits vary. | Recording and archive require additional system choices; a basic relay does not establish a sermon library. |
| Viewer playback | A plan may include a website player, adaptive bitrate or OTT options. | The church must arrange a viewer format and delivery path; RTMP ingest alone is not a complete viewer experience. |
| Destinations | Some services support website embedding and social simulcasting, subject to plan limits. | Relaying to destinations is a configuration task the church owns. |
| Support and recovery | Check what support and service commitments the provider includes. | The church team or a separately hired operator diagnoses failures and restores service. |
| Control | Convenient packaged features, subject to provider terms and product limits. | Greater control of server configuration and routing, with matching operational responsibility. |

Sermon.net
Sermon.net publishes audio and video plans with different usage allowances and overage charges. Its page describes website streaming, live and on-demand media, and automatic rebroadcasting to Facebook and YouTube on video plans. Its help material lists tools including OBS, vMix, Wirecast and ATEM Mini Pro; that equipment list does not mean every church needs a hardware switcher. See Sermon.net pricing and live streaming help.

Sermon.net distinguishes storage from bandwidth: storage accumulates while bandwidth resets monthly. Its usage guide estimates a one-hour video at 1,500 Kbps at 0.64 GB and a one-hour video at 3,000 Kbps at 1.29 GB. These are the vendor’s examples, not a promise of each stream’s actual usage. What a self-hosted VPS requires
The OBS Project’s private-hosting guide outlines a dedicated Debian server, nginx compiled with nginx-rtmp-module, RTMP configuration, and a custom server URL and stream key in OBS. The page describes itself as a high-level guide and directs readers to additional installation and module-configuration resources. Its stated Debian version is old, so use current operating-system and software documentation rather than copying dated version assumptions. See the OBS Project private hosting guide.

- Define the service you need. Decide whether viewers need a website player, HLS playback, social destinations, replay archive or captions. A relay alone does not provide all of these.
- Choose and provision the server. Select an appropriate current Linux distribution and VPS plan. Estimate peak concurrent viewers, stream bitrate, event duration and regional outbound-traffic rates before settling on capacity.
- Install and configure the relay. Follow current nginx and RTMP-module documentation for the chosen operating system. The OBS guide is architectural guidance, not a complete current installation recipe.
- Set up the encoder destination. In OBS, configure a custom server URL and stream key for your endpoint, as described by the project guide. Keep keys private and define who may access or rotate them.
- Provide viewer delivery. Decide how the stream becomes playable to congregants, such as an HLS path and a website player, and how that traffic will be delivered. Test from outside the church network.
- Plan operations before Sunday. Assign responsibility for updates, monitoring, backups, incident response and recovery. Test a complete service-length stream and confirm who will respond if ingest or playback fails.
CubePath’s January 11, 2026 tutorial gives an illustrative non-transcoding example using at least 1 vCPU and 1 GB RAM, and estimates that a 3 Mbps stream watched by 50 people needs about 150 Mbps. These are tutorial examples, not guaranteed production sizing or a hosting quote. The relationship is important: outbound demand rises with stream bitrate and simultaneous viewers. An older OBS forum guide likewise explains this dependency, but its 2014 commands and software assumptions are dated. See the CubePath tutorial and the OBS forum guide, March 25, 2014.
Estimate usage and total cost
For a hosted plan, compare the recurring subscription with the allowance that matches how your congregation watches. A storage allowance, a monthly bandwidth allowance and viewer-hours measure different things. Check whether live and replay viewing draw on the same pool, how overages are charged, and whether the plan includes the player, archive retention, destinations and support you need.

For a VPS, account for more than the server’s base price: include outbound traffic, any separate playback or storage components, and the time or paid help needed to operate it. Peak simultaneous viewers matter more than a simple count of people who might watch at some point. A church-specific break-even price cannot be established without audience, bitrate, event length, archive and regional egress details.
Before comparing offers, write down typical and peak concurrent viewers, weekly stream duration, chosen resolution and bitrate, archive retention, destinations, and available technical staffing. Then request or calculate each option’s full cost for those conditions.

Choose based on your church’s capacity and needs
- Limited technical volunteer time: start with hosted services and compare their total cost, viewer delivery, player, archive, destinations, allowances and support.
- A capable operator and a clear need for control: price a VPS using realistic Sunday peaks, then assign named responsibility for setup, updates, security, monitoring, backups and recovery.
- Only social distribution is required: consider a multistreaming service, but confirm separately whether it meets website playback and archive needs.
- Hardware is a concern: a production switcher such as the ATEM Mini Pro is optional equipment listed in Sermon.net’s help material, not a universal prerequisite for streaming.
Common problems to prevent
- The VPS bill exceeds expectations: peak concurrent viewers and bitrate drive outbound traffic. Estimate both and check the host’s regional egress rates before choosing a plan.
- The stream reaches the relay but viewers cannot watch: RTMP ingest is not necessarily browser-ready delivery. Configure and test a viewer format and player separately.
- The archive is missing: a basic relay does not establish recording, retention or replay. Select and test an archive workflow explicitly.
- No one can restore service: self-hosting leaves diagnosis and recovery to your operator or a hired specialist. Assign ownership and rehearse the recovery process.
- A plan’s allowance is misunderstood: storage, bandwidth and viewer-hours are not interchangeable. Confirm what is counted, when it resets and what happens at the limit.
- Credentials are exposed or unavailable: restrict access to stream keys and document secure rotation and recovery responsibilities.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live continuously; it is not a camera-based production or a church website player. To use it, upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer can be off while the cloud loops the uploaded video. It is best suited when the goal is a continuous YouTube channel stream, not when you need a complete church platform with congregation-facing playback, archives or social simulcasting.
Each slot is one flat price for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers. It includes 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Plans can be purchased by the day, week, month, six months or year and canceled any time; UPI and cards are available in India, with card checkout worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Visit StreamNeo or start the free first day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a church need an ATEM Mini Pro to stream a sermon?
No. It is one optional production tool listed in Sermon.net’s live-streaming help, not a requirement for every church.
Is a VPS relay the same as a church streaming platform?
No. A relay can receive and forward a stream, but viewer playback, archives, captions and support may require separate components or services.
