Tom Hardy narrates its announcement trailer, but he is not the player character: you create your own character and pursue a place in a world shaped by war, trade, diplomacy, politics and ambition. The game’s advertised mix of political simulation and direct combat invites comparisons to Crusader Kings and Mount & Blade—useful shorthand, not proof that it matches either series.
What is Chronicles: Medieval?
Raw Power Games describes Chronicles: Medieval as a medieval sandbox RPG set in Europe during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Its central idea is that the player acts within a wider world rather than serving as the center of every event. Lead Producer Sam Millen put the intent this way in Developer Diary #1: “You are not the centre of that world. You are a part of it, and what you do within it is all up to you.”
The studio says the world is intended to respond to events such as sieges and caravan attacks, affecting political and economic conditions. Players are meant to be able to pursue combat, trade, diplomacy, politics and social advancement. Those are announced design goals for a game still in development, not independently verified features of a finished release.
How do Crusader Kings and Mount & Blade fit the comparison?
The comparison captures two different parts of the pitch: political relationships and a simulated world on one side, direct character combat and battlefield command on the other. Players have used the “Crusader Kings and Mount & Blade mix” framing, and press coverage has described a blend of strategy and third-person fighting. The studio has not established that the game is equivalent to either series, nor is it a sequel or official combination of them.

| Comparison | What Chronicles: Medieval has announced | What the comparison does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Crusader Kings | Diplomacy, politics, social advancement and a world whose conditions can be affected by events. | Equivalent political depth, systems or quality. |
| Mount & Blade | Direct combat, battles, army management and command, including unit deployment and promotion in developer material. | Equivalent combat feel, battlefield scale or final execution. |
The game takes inspiration from the Hundred Years’ War era, but Raw Power Games says it is not intended as a strict historical recreation or direct simulation of that conflict. Developer material says combat direction draws on historical European martial arts sources; that is an account of inspiration, not evidence of historical accuracy or tested combat quality. More comparison context appears in GamesRadar+’s 2025 coverage and in player discussion about a possible Bannerlord comparison.
What will you do in the game?
Explore an overworld
The official Q&A calls the top-down overworld the “Exploration Map.” The announcement presents exploration as part of a broader journey through the world, rather than describing a purely menu-based strategy game. Details may change while development continues.
Create a character and rise through society
Players are expected to create their own character and build influence through the opportunities they pursue. The advertised paths include trade, diplomacy, politics and social advancement, alongside combat. Tom Hardy’s role is narration for the announcement trailer; the official description does not present him as the protagonist or a character you play.

Fight, lead and maintain an army
Raw Power Games has described direct combat, sieges, fighting for land and leading armies in large-scale battles. Developer diary material discusses unit deployment and command, recruiting and maintaining an army, gaining experience and promoting units. These are features shown or described as work in progress, so they should not be treated as a final feature list or a hands-on verdict.
When is Chronicles: Medieval coming out?
The current target is early 2027 for PC Early Access on Steam, according to the newer update in the official Steam developer diaries and the Raw Power Games game page. The team says it moved the Early Access release to early 2027 after reconsidering its development goals. Older official FAQ and announcement text still refers to 2026; the newer schedule is the current one to use. It is a target, not a confirmed launch date, and development plans can change.
