ChromeOS-like desktop computing on a phone has been demonstrated, but it is not a supported ChromeOS phone product. A 2024 experiment ran ChromiumOS—a ChromeOS-related open-source system—inside Android’s virtualization framework on Pixel hardware, then projected it to a larger display. That makes the idea more tangible, not ready for everyday use.
Can you run ChromeOS on a phone?
A Pixel has been shown running ChromiumOS in a virtual machine while Android remains the phone’s normal operating system. The setup, reported by Chrome Unboxed on May 14, 2024, is an experimental demonstration rather than a broadly available installation or retail phone feature.
The distinction matters: ChromiumOS is the open-source project related to ChromeOS, but the demonstration does not mean that a standard, Google-certified ChromeOS image is available for phones. The report says Mishaal Rahman demonstrated the setup on a Pixel 7 Pro and describes substantial manual work to get it running. It is not presented as a consumer-ready install.
What is Ferrochrome?
Ferrochrome is the name used in the report for the experimental ChromiumOS build or project involved in the demonstration. The concept is to keep Android available for regular phone use and run a desktop-style ChromiumOS environment when the phone is connected to a larger screen. As Chrome Unboxed founder Robby Payne put it, “The idea has always been straightforward: let a Pixel phone run Android like normal when not connected to a display, and then allow it to swap to ChromeOS when extended to a larger screen.”

That describes the goal, not a finished product. The report says Google had no near-term plan to ship this setup on phones. It also says Google had moved beyond officially supporting only its custom “microdroid” build in AVF; that statement is Chrome Unboxed’s account, not a separate Google product announcement.
How does the Android virtualization framework fit in?
The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) describes the Android Virtualization Framework (AVF) as a way to run protected virtual machines alongside Android. Its documentation says, “Android Virtualization Framework (AVF) provides secure and private execution environments for executing code.” The AOSP AVF documentation, last updated June 25, 2026 UTC, says AVF is supported only on ARM64 devices.

AVF provides a technical foundation for running a guest operating system; it does not establish that Ferrochrome will work on every ARM64 phone. Actual compatibility also depends on device firmware, graphics support, display output, storage, boot-chain policy, and the manufacturer’s integration. Nor does virtualization itself provide a consumer update channel, phone-call integration, or ongoing product support for the guest system.
What did the Pixel demonstration show?
Chrome Unboxed reports demonstrations using Pixel hardware. The report describes a Pixel 8’s display-out capability projecting the environment to a large display, while Mishaal Rahman’s hands-on setup was on a Pixel 7 Pro. The practical point is that the desktop environment was shown on an external screen; this was not a demonstration of a phone replacing a Chromebook in every everyday task.

To recreate the physical idea, the most relevant accessory is a USB-C portable monitor, potentially alongside a compatible dock, cable, and power source. These are display-path accessories, not guarantees of software compatibility. The phone must support display output, and the software path must work on that specific device. The cited demonstration does not establish that any Android phone or monitor combination will work.
Is ChromeOS officially coming to Pixel phones?
The cited report does not establish a planned consumer release, official phone support, or a general-purpose installer. It characterizes the work as an experiment and says Google had no near-term plan to ship it on phones. That is the status reported on May 14, 2024; it should not be treated as proof of a current product roadmap beyond what the report states.

For a supported desktop experience today, a Chromebook remains the established ChromeOS device. Android phones also have their own supported features, but the Ferrochrome showcase does not turn a Pixel into an officially supported Chromebook replacement.

- Device support: AVF’s ARM64 requirement narrows the technical baseline, while firmware, graphics, and vendor integration would still need to be addressed phone by phone.
- Reliable display setup: Users would need a compatible external display connection, with clear support for the phone, monitor, dock, and cable combination.
- Updates and security: AOSP documents AVF’s isolation model, but the reported experiment does not establish consumer OTA updates or a support schedule for ChromiumOS-on-phone.
- Phone features: The report does not establish how calls, notifications, cameras, sensors, or handoff between Android and ChromeOS would work in a finished product.
Until those pieces are part of a supported release, Ferrochrome is best understood as a promising technical demonstration—not a practical way to retire a Chromebook or install ChromeOS on an ordinary phone.
