ChromeOS LTS is an existing update channel for business and school administrators—not a new setting for every Chromebook owner. It delivers cumulative feature updates every six months, with targeted security fixes between releases. Google has reaffirmed that cadence as ChromeOS version numbering changes, while Stable remains on its faster four-week cycle.

What ChromeOS LTS changes—and what it doesn’t

LTS, or Long-term Support, is intended for organizations that want a more consistent feature set across managed ChromeOS devices. Compared with Stable, it reduces how often new features and other changes arrive. It does not mean a Chromebook receives no updates for six months: Google’s administrator guidance describes targeted security updates every two weeks between LTS feature releases. Stable remains the faster channel, with a four-week release cycle. Google says ChromeOS releases will continue on that cycle even as version numbers change. LTS is an administrator-selected option managed through the Admin console; it is not an automatic choice for personal Chromebook users. Google’s ChromeOS FAQ

How the channels compare

Channel Feature-release cadence Security maintenance Best suited to
Stable Every four weeks, according to Google’s current ChromeOS release guidance. Google release notes Updates are delivered in the background; the cited LTS documentation does not specify a comparable Stable security-update interval. Google’s ChromeOS FAQ Organizations that want the faster standard release cadence.
LTS Every six months; Google says this interval is unchanged. Google release notes Targeted security fixes are issued every two weeks, but not every critical fix can necessarily be included promptly. Google’s LTS guidance Managed school or business fleets where a slower-changing feature set is valuable.

Why Google says the six-month interval is continuing

Google’s September 23, 2026 release notes explain that ChromeOS version numbers will begin increasing by two at version 154, aligning their numbering cadence with the Chrome browser. The numbering change does not alter the product release schedule: ChromeOS remains on a four-week release cycle, while LTS versions continue every six months and advance by 12. The security tradeoff administrators need to weigh

A slower feature cadence can make a managed fleet easier to keep consistent, but it also means the LTS code base can diverge from newer releases. Google warns that some critical security fixes may not be possible in an LTS monthly update. In some cases, a fix may be delayed until the next major LTS version—potentially as long as nine months. Organizations should weigh that risk against the value of limiting feature changes, particularly for sensitive deployments. Google’s LTS guidance

How administrators move devices to LTS

Channel changes have version prerequisites, so LTS is not simply a switch that can be applied immediately to every device. Google recommends moving managed devices from Stable to the Long-term Support Candidate (LTC) channel first, then moving them to LTS when the corresponding LTS version becomes available.

  1. Check the device version and your update policies. A Stable device can move to LTC when its ChromeOS version matches LTC, which occurs around six-month intersections, unless the device is pinned to an earlier version.
  2. Move eligible devices from Stable to LTC in the Admin console. If a device has already advanced past the matching version, it may have to remain on its current version while it waits. Google notes that during this wait it misses Stable-channel security updates.
  3. Move from LTC to LTS when the matching LTS version is available. This is the recommended path for administrators adopting LTS.
  4. For a direct Stable-to-LTS move, verify the version condition. The device must be pinned to or running a ChromeOS version no later than the LTS version.
  5. To return from LTC or LTS to Stable, change the channel in the Admin console. Google says the change takes effect on the next reboot.

Who should consider LTS?

LTS is most relevant to IT teams managing school or business devices that benefit from fewer feature changes and can plan channel transitions around version availability. Stable is the more direct fit for teams that want the faster release cadence. The choice should account for both deployment consistency and Google’s warning that some security fixes may reach LTS later than Stable.

This is a management decision, not a reason for an individual user to buy a different Chromebook. The relevant question is whether an organization manages its devices through ChromeOS administration and can accept the channel’s release and security tradeoffs.
