On April 26, 2022, Chrome Unboxed reported that ChromeOS Canary had an experimental control to pin a window so it would stay in the foreground. The report said the feature required enabling the #cros-labs-float-window flag. That was a Canary experiment—not a current feature announcement—and it is different from Google’s present-day Float a window control, which keeps a floated window in the background when you switch apps.
What the 2022 ChromeOS pinning experiment did
Johanna Romero’s April 26, 2022 report described a pin icon that appeared at the top right of an open window after a user enabled the #cros-labs-float-window experiment in ChromeOS Canary. Clicking the icon was reported to keep the app window in the foreground while the user moved among other apps. The article offered Spotify and Google Keep as examples of apps someone might want to keep visible while working.
The report also noted that the early interface did not provide a strong visual cue showing whether a window was pinned. These details describe the experimental Canary build covered in that report; they do not establish that the feature reached general availability or that it works the same way in current ChromeOS.
How current ChromeOS Float works
Google’s current Chromebook window and tab instructions describe a different behavior. To float a window, open its maximize menu and select Float. You can then reposition or resize it. Google says a floated window stays in the background when you open or select another window or app, so it does not remain on top as the 2022 pin control was reported to do.

Because the foreground behavior differs, Google’s current Float command should not be treated as proof that the Canary pin experiment continued under the same name or behavior.
Other floating-window tools are separate
Picture-in-Picture for video
ChromeOS also supports Picture-in-Picture, which provides a floating video window while you work in other websites or apps. Google’s Picture-in-Picture instructions explain how to resize the video window and tuck it to the side. This is a media-viewing workflow, not a general control for pinning any app window above others.

Window Shape API for certain web apps
A separate developer capability, the Window Shape API, allows custom window layouts—including non-rectangular and non-contiguous shapes—for allowlisted Isolated Web Apps on ChromeOS. The July 8, 2026 Chromium developer announcement says the API requires unframed display mode and the window-management permission. It is also listed in the Chrome 154 release notes, whose stable release date is September 22, 2026. This is an app-development feature, not an ordinary user’s pin-to-foreground switch.

The available documentation establishes that pin-to-foreground behavior was reported as experimental in ChromeOS Canary in 2022. Google’s current user guidance covers Float and Picture-in-Picture, while its developer and release documentation covers the separate Window Shape API. Those sources do not establish whether the old #cros-labs-float-window pin control remains available in current ChromeOS builds. They also do not establish that Google formally removed it.

For current, documented options, use Float when you want a movable window that remains in the background as you change apps, or Picture-in-Picture for supported video. Neither is the same as the foreground-pinning behavior described in the 2022 report.
