No: ChromeOS 94 was not the last ChromeOS release on a six-week schedule. The confusion comes from Google’s separate 2021 announcement that Chrome 94, the Chrome browser release, would begin a four-week browser cycle. ChromeOS continued its six-week cadence until milestone M96 in December 2021. Neither milestone tells you when your particular Chromebook will stop receiving updates; check its device-specific schedule instead.
Why Chrome 94 and ChromeOS 94 are easy to confuse
Chrome is Google’s web browser; ChromeOS is the operating system on a Chromebook. They share release milestones, but a browser release announcement does not establish the operating system’s release cadence.
In 2021, Chrome for Developers said Chrome 94 was planned as the first Stable browser release on a four-week schedule, with a planned release date of September 21, 2021. The announcement also said Chrome 93, planned for August 31, would be the last browser release on the previous six-week schedule. Those were browser dates and plans, and Google noted the timeline could change. Google’s release-cycle announcement is not evidence that ChromeOS 94 was the last six-week system update.
When did ChromeOS switch to a four-week cadence?
The Chromium Projects’ historical release documentation says ChromeOS releases before M96 followed a six-week cycle. M96, in December 2021, marked the start of the four-week ChromeOS era. That is later than the browser’s planned switch at Chrome 94. The ChromeOS release history distinguishes the operating system’s schedule from Chrome’s browser schedule.

What was included in ChromeOS 94?
Google’s ChromeOS 94 Enterprise Release Notes, dated October 14, 2021, highlighted several changes. The notes were written for administrators, so listed changes should not be taken as a guarantee that every user noticed them in the same way.
- Select-to-speak: more natural-sounding voices.
- Virtual desks: improved desk labels when moving tabs.
- Camera: document scanning, with the option to save scans as a PDF or image.
These are release highlights, not a statement about how long any Chromebook will receive future updates. See Google’s ChromeOS 94 Enterprise Release Notes for the administrator-focused details.

How to check when your Chromebook gets its last update
Update end dates vary by device. Google says, “The specified date depends on your device.” Check the schedule shown for your own Chromebook rather than estimating from its age or the ChromeOS 94 milestone.
- Open Settings on the Chromebook.
- Select About ChromeOS.
- Open Additional details.
- Under Update schedule, check when the device will receive its last update.
Google’s instructions for checking a Chromebook’s update schedule provide the device-level guidance. For a model-specific policy date, consult Google’s Auto Update policy and approved-device list. Google’s current policy states that ChromeOS devices receive ten years of updates, with dates listed by device; check the current entry for the exact model.

What happens after the final update?
A Chromebook does not necessarily stop working on its last-update date. Google says, “If your Chromebook is working well, you can keep using it.” However, after the final software update it will no longer receive ChromeOS or browser updates, including security updates, bug fixes, and new features. Google explains the choices in Use or upgrade an old Chromebook.
Whether to keep or replace it depends on your needs. Before deciding, consider:

Google also cautions that some features or services may not be available on pre-2021 devices receiving extended updates. That qualification matters if you are deciding whether to keep an older Chromebook or buy a replacement.
