ChromeOS 136 adds Quick Share enhancements, including a longer window for sharing with everyone nearby: Available to everyone visibility can stay on for up to 10 minutes, increased from 5 minutes. Quick Share is off by default on Chromebooks; set it up in Settings under Connected devices. The new Quick Settings controls may take time to appear because Google is rolling them out progressively.

What changed in ChromeOS 136 Quick Share?

Google lists “Quick Share enhancements” in the ChromeOS 136 release notes. The specific user-facing change in Google’s May 15, 2025 M136 announcement is a longer maximum duration for Visible to everyone mode: up to 10 minutes, compared with 5 minutes before the change. That temporary visibility window lets nearby Android devices and other Chromebooks find the Chromebook for file sharing.

The announcement also says that Quick Share’s toggle, visibility choices and settings page are available from Quick Settings as the feature rolls out. Google describes Quick Share as a way to share files between Android devices and Chromebooks. See Google’s ChromeOS 136 release notes and the M136 stable-channel announcement.

How to set up Quick Share on a Chromebook

Google says Quick Share is disabled by default. Use the Chromebook’s Settings app to set it up and choose who can see the device:

Your devices Your devices signed in to the same Google Account Transfers between devices signed in to the same Google Account are automatically accepted, according to Google.
Contacts People in your contacts Use this when you want to share with known contacts rather than everyone nearby.
Hidden No one can discover the Chromebook through Quick Share Choose this when you do not want the device to appear as available to others.
Available to everyone Nearby compatible devices In ChromeOS 136, this mode can remain available for up to 10 minutes. Turn it on when needed, then let the temporary window expire or change visibility.

Send or receive a file with Quick Share

Send

  1. From an app, select Share, then Quick Share. In the Files app, open the file’s Share menu and choose Quick Share.
  2. Select the nearby device you want to share with.
  3. Confirm the share if prompted.

Receive

  1. Set the Chromebook’s visibility so the sending device can find it.
  2. When the incoming share notification appears, review it and select Accept.

Google says transfers between devices signed in to the same Google Account are accepted automatically. Quick Share can be used with nearby Chromebooks and Android devices; compatibility with Windows is part of the wider Quick Share ecosystem, but the ChromeOS 136 announcement specifically describes Chromebook and Android sharing.

Why are the new Quick Settings controls missing?

Google says the M136 update and associated features roll out progressively over the days after release. As a result, a Chromebook running ChromeOS 136 may not show the new integrated Quick Share controls immediately. Check for an operating-system update at Settings > About ChromeOS > Check for updates. That can install an available update, but it cannot force a separate server-side feature rollout to reach the device.

Optional flag workaround

Chrome Unboxed reported that, on one ChromeOS 136 device, enabling chrome://flags/#quick-share-v2, selecting Enabled, and restarting the browser exposed integrated Quick Share controls. This is an attributed experiment, not a Google-supported setup requirement or a guaranteed fix. Chrome flags are experimental and can change, disappear, or behave differently across ChromeOS channels.
