Chrome 131 for the browser reached Stable on November 12—a separate release milestone, 20 calendar days earlier. Google did not publish a ChromeOS 131 target date or confirm a formal delay in the sources cited here.
When did ChromeOS 131 reach Stable?
ChromeOS.dev lists ChromeOS 131 as released to Stable on December 2, 2024. Google later announced that ChromeOS 131.0.6778.96, platform version 16063.45.0, had reached Stable for most devices on December 11, 2024. Those dates describe different points in the rollout: the Stable release listing and a subsequent update announcement covering most devices. Neither means every Chromebook received the update on that date.
Google’s ChromeOS 131 release page highlights Safety reset and flash notifications. Safety reset can reset Chrome settings and shortcuts, disable extensions, and remove cookies and other temporary site data, while leaving bookmarks, history, and saved passwords unaffected. See Google’s ChromeOS 131 release notes.
Why the “one week late” claim is unverified
To establish that a release is late, there must be a planned date to compare against its actual release. The official sources cited here give ChromeOS 131’s Stable date, but do not provide its original target date or confirm that Google formally delayed it. Without that baseline, a delay duration—and a reason for one—cannot be verified.

Google’s Chrome Enterprise and Education Help says, “ChromeOS updates are published one week before ChromeOS Stable Release.” That is guidance about when update information is published, not an announced target date for ChromeOS 131. A release-notes publication window should not be treated as proof that the operating system’s rollout was scheduled for a particular day. Google’s ChromeOS release notes guidance.
Chrome 131 and ChromeOS 131 are different milestones
Chrome 131 browser Stable was dated November 12, 2024, on Chrome for Developers. ChromeOS 131 reached Stable on December 2, 20 calendar days later. The browser date is not evidence that ChromeOS 131 was due on November 19, or on any other particular date: the sources identify separate milestones and do not give a ChromeOS 131 schedule. Google’s release documentation describes a four-week cycle across channels for milestones M96–M152. That broad cadence does not establish ChromeOS 131’s planned Stable date, so it cannot be used to calculate a delay. ChromiumOS release documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Chromebook owners should take from the dates
ChromeOS 131 was released to Stable, and Google announced version 131.0.6778.96 for most devices on December 11, 2024. The phrase “most devices” matters: Chromebook updates can reach devices at different times, so the announcement does not show that every model updated simultaneously. The available official information supports the release dates, but not the claim that ChromeOS 131 was a full week late or any explanation for a delay.
