ChromeOS 124’s official release notes do not identify a smarter Settings search as a new feature. If the Settings app’s search box seems to find options more effectively on your Chromebook, that may be a useful device-specific observation—but the available release documentation does not establish that version 124 introduced it.
What ChromeOS 124 says about Settings search
Google’s ChromeOS 124 release summary does not list an upgrade to search inside the Settings app. It highlights other changes, including a larger maximum mouse-pointer size, automatic scanner-driver downloads when a scanner is connected, Fast Pair for mice, and smoother video on congested Wi-Fi through QoS. The initial QoS release was not available to managed users.
That absence does not prove that no Chromebook user noticed different search behavior. It means the official summary does not substantiate attributing a smarter Settings search to ChromeOS 124. The sources also do not document its matching algorithm, synonyms, ranking rules, or a reproducible query-and-result example.
Settings search is not the default web search setting
ChromeOS 124 did include a default search engine choice screen. That setting controls which provider Chrome uses for web searches; Google identifies its location as chrome://settings/search. It is distinct from typing a query into the search box within the ChromeOS Settings app. The default-engine screen is therefore not evidence of a change to Settings search.

What the nearby release notes do—and do not—establish
Google’s ChromeOS Long-term Support release notes list an “Enhanced Settings page experience” under ChromeOS 123. That is relevant context, but the entry does not establish that the change involved Settings search, so it should not be treated as proof of a search upgrade in either version 123 or 124.
Check the version on the Chromebook you used
ChromeOS updates do not necessarily reach every device at the same moment. Google’s May 14, 2024 stable-channel announcement identifies version 124.0.6367.219 and platform version 15823.58.0 for most ChromeOS devices. If you are describing a particular search result, record the Chromebook model and its installed version/build rather than assuming that every device had the same behavior. The sources reviewed do not establish whether Settings search varies by model, rollout, locale, or managed status.

- Open the Chromebook’s Settings app.
- Select About ChromeOS to check the installed version and update information.
- If documenting a search result, note the exact query, the setting it surfaced, the device model, and whether the device is managed.
Those details make a firsthand observation precise without presenting it as a documented ChromeOS 124 release feature.
