If your Chromecast keeps buffering, first check whether other devices on the same Wi-Fi can get online. If they cannot, focus on the router or internet service; if they can, check the Chromecast’s Wi-Fi connection, placement, and network conditions before considering an Ethernet adapter or factory reset. These steps are troubleshooting options, not guaranteed cures.
Why does my Chromecast keep buffering?
Buffering can happen when the Chromecast’s connection to the home network is weak or disrupted, or when the network or internet service is unavailable. Start by finding out whether the problem affects the whole network or just the streaming device. Google’s reconnect guidance recommends checking the connection on another device and restarting the router when internet access is unavailable.
Check for a wider internet problem
- Connect a phone, tablet, or computer to the same Wi-Fi network and try to access the internet.
- If several devices cannot get online, restart the router and check whether your internet service is down. If access still does not return, contact your internet service provider to ask about an outage or changed network settings.
- If other devices work normally, move on to checks specific to the Chromecast and its connection.
How do I stop Chromecast from buffering?
Work through these reversible checks before buying equipment or resetting the device. Google’s Chromecast and Google TV Streamer connection guide covers network, restart, placement, interference, and coverage troubleshooting.
1. Confirm the Wi-Fi network and band
- In the device’s network settings, confirm that the Chromecast is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network. The phone you use to cast should be on that same network.
- If your router offers both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, Google recommends trying 5 GHz where the Chromecast supports it. Do not assume every generation supports the same bands: Google says the first-generation Chromecast supports 2.4 GHz only. Check the model before changing bands or troubleshooting a missing network. See Google’s Wi-Fi connection guidance.
2. Update and restart the network equipment
Check whether the router has a firmware update, then restart the Chromecast and modem or router using the manufacturer’s instructions. Google’s reconnect steps specify unplugging the router for two minutes in one scenario, but its general connection guidance directs users to the router maker’s instructions. Follow the instructions for your equipment rather than treating one restart interval as universal.

3. Improve the Chromecast’s position
Move the streaming device away from the TV and from other devices, wires, and cables that could contribute to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth interference. Google Support advises: “To help prevent Wi-Fi or Bluetooth interference, move your streaming device further away from your TV. Also, don’t let it touch other devices, wires, or cables.” Google also suggests moving the router within 20 feet of the streaming device; treat that as a troubleshooting suggestion, not a guaranteed range limit.
4. Consider coverage and network load
If buffering is worse where the Chromecast is located, or the network has many connected devices, investigate Wi-Fi coverage and capacity. Google identifies network load and coverage as considerations and notes mesh networking as one possible way to improve coverage. A different router or mesh system is worth considering only when a coverage or capacity problem is a credible cause; it is not a required fix for every buffering issue.

5. Check for network isolation or a managed network
If the Chromecast cannot connect or devices cannot find one another, check whether the router has AP isolation, client isolation, or a guest-network setting that blocks communication between devices. Do not change settings on a work, school, hotel, or other managed network without asking its administrator. Google says captive-portal networks, commonly used by hotels, schools, dorms, and businesses, are not supported for setup. Its Wi-Fi setup guidance explains these network restrictions.
Would Ethernet help if Wi-Fi is still unreliable?
A wired connection can be an alternative when Wi-Fi remains unreliable at the TV and a cable route to the router is practical. Google documents Ethernet adapters for Chromecast Ultra and Chromecast with Google TV, and says Chromecast and Chromecast with Google TV support Ethernet despite lacking a built-in Ethernet port. Compatibility depends on the exact device model and connector, so verify both before buying.

| Option | When it makes sense | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Keep troubleshooting Wi-Fi | When placement, interference, router settings, or coverage may be the cause. | Confirm the Chromecast’s network and supported band; check router condition and placement. |
| Use wired Ethernet | When Wi-Fi remains unreliable at the TV and an Ethernet route to the router is practical. | Confirm adapter compatibility for the exact Chromecast model, plus a working router and suitable Ethernet cable. |
| Improve router or mesh coverage | When you have identified a coverage or network-capacity problem. | Consider the coverage area and practical placement or cabling constraints before choosing equipment. |
When should you factory-reset the Chromecast?
Leave a factory reset until after the network, band, restart, placement, interference, and coverage checks. Google includes factory reset later in its connection troubleshooting sequence. Because it resets the device, it is not the first response to intermittent buffering; follow the device-specific reset instructions only if the earlier checks have not helped.

What the official guidance does—and does not—establish
Google’s support pages provide troubleshooting steps, but they do not state how common each cause is or give a measured success rate for any fix. Treat the checks above as ways to isolate and address possible network causes, not as a promise that one particular step will resolve buffering.
