Neither a Chromebook nor a Windows laptop is better for everyone. Choose based on the applications, websites, and devices you need: a Chromebook fits workflows that work well in ChromeOS, the browser, and available apps; a Windows laptop is the better fit when your required software or peripherals need Windows. Before buying, check offline access, the exact model’s support horizon, and its hardware configuration.
Start with the apps and devices you need
Make a list of the software, websites, school or workplace systems, and peripherals you rely on. Check that each works with the operating system—and, where relevant, the exact laptop model. A platform-level comparison cannot guarantee compatibility for every app, account, or device.
- Consider a Chromebook if your work is centered on browser-based services, Google services, and apps available for ChromeOS.
- Consider a Windows laptop if a required application or peripheral needs Windows. Verify the specific app’s requirements rather than assuming that meeting Windows’ minimum requirements is enough.
Chromebooks run ChromeOS, with Google services built in. Windows laptops run Microsoft Windows. The distinction that matters for your decision is whether your essential workflow is supported on the system you choose.
Browser-based work, installed software, and offline use
A Chromebook can suit a web-first workflow, but “works in a browser” does not automatically mean “works offline.” Google says offline-ready apps can keep working without an internet connection; that does not establish that every web app or workflow has offline access. Check the offline behavior of the specific services and apps you depend on.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
For a Windows laptop, confirm that the installed software you need supports the Windows version and hardware in the model you are considering. For either platform, check the exact requirements of specialized apps and any school or workplace systems before purchase.
Compare update support before you buy
Chromebooks: check the model’s update end date
Google’s current policy provides 10 years of automatic updates for ChromeOS devices, but the end date depends on the specific device. Look up the model in Google’s Chromebook update schedule rather than estimating support from the Chromebook name or purchase date.

- Storage: 16GB Flash Memory
- OS: Chrome OS
- Screen Size: 11.6"
Older eligible Chromebooks: understand extended updates
Eligible Chromebooks released before 2021 can opt into extended updates, for a total of 10 years from the platform release. Google says opting in removes Android apps and the Google Play Store, and the choice cannot be reversed. Review Google’s extended-update guidance before enabling it or buying a model that uses it.
Windows laptops: keep the installed version supported
Windows 11 feature releases receive monthly quality updates. Microsoft’s support windows are generally 24 months for Home and Pro editions and 36 months for Enterprise and Education editions; the exact lifecycle depends on the edition and version. Check Microsoft’s Windows lifecycle FAQ and make sure the laptop can stay on a supported Windows version.

Check Windows 11 requirements—and your workload’s needs
Microsoft’s minimum requirements for Windows 11 include a compatible processor, at least 4 GB of RAM, at least 64 GB of storage, UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability, and TPM 2.0. These are installation requirements, not a promise that a particular application or workload will perform well. Microsoft cautions that specific features, apps, and added hardware may require more than the minimum. See the full Windows 11 system requirements and the requirements for your own apps.
Compare the actual laptops, not just the platforms
Once you know which operating systems can support your workflow, compare the specific models and configurations you can buy. The platform guidance does not establish that Chromebooks are always cheaper, faster, longer-lasting on a charge, or more durable than Windows laptops.

Choose by workflow
A Chromebook is a sensible choice when your required work fits ChromeOS, browser-based services, and available apps—and the model’s support schedule works for you. A Windows laptop is the stronger fit when your essential software or devices require Windows, provided the laptop meets those requirements. If both platforms could work, decide by checking offline needs, support dates, and the configuration and price of the exact models.
