If your Chromebook shows “OS verification is OFF” after you enabled Developer Mode, press Ctrl+D or wait about 30 seconds to continue starting up. This is usually the expected Developer Mode warning—not a sign that ChromeOS is damaged. If the screen instead says “ChromeOS is missing or damaged” or asks for recovery media, follow the recovery path below.
First, identify which screen you have
| Screen wording | What it means | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| “OS verification is OFF” | This is the expected startup warning when the Chromebook is in Developer Mode. | Press Ctrl+D, or wait about 30 seconds for startup to continue. Google’s ChromeOS developer instructions document both options. |
| “ChromeOS is missing or damaged,” or a request for recovery media | This is a recovery error, not the normal Developer Mode warning. | Try less invasive steps first; if the problem remains, use the model-appropriate ChromeOS recovery process. Recovery erases local files. Google’s Chromebook recovery instructions explain the process. |
Continue past the Developer Mode warning
- At the “OS verification is OFF” screen, press Ctrl+D on the Chromebook keyboard.
- If you do not press a key, wait about 30 seconds for startup to continue.
This only continues the boot process; it does not enable Developer Mode. Google’s Developer Mode instructions describe enabling the mode as a separate transition that starts from Recovery mode and requires confirmation. If Developer Mode is already enabled, do not repeat that transition just to get past the warning.
If Ctrl+D does not work
- Use the Chromebook’s built-in keyboard where possible, and check that you are pressing the correct keys for your model.
- If the screen does not respond to the built-in keyboard, restart the Chromebook and try again. Do not begin a recovery process unless the screen indicates a recovery problem or the device otherwise cannot start.
- If you are trying to enter Recovery mode, the common combination is Esc+Refresh+Power; some models use Esc+Maximize+Power. Key combinations vary, so check the manufacturer’s instructions if neither works. Google’s recovery guidance notes this model variation.
Leave Developer Mode and return to normal startup
If you want to turn Developer Mode off rather than continue using it, use the firmware screen’s verification option:
- Chromebook with a keyboard: press Space at the firmware screen.
- Tablet: use Volume-Up and Volume-Down to select “Enable OS Verification”, then press Power.
Switching into or out of Developer Mode wipes the stateful partition, so save any local data you need before changing modes. Google’s Developer Mode instructions describe the transition and its data impact.

Use ChromeOS recovery only for a recovery problem
Recovery removes and reinstalls ChromeOS and permanently erases local files, including downloaded files. Back up accessible files first. If you can sign in, Google recommends restarting and trying a factory reset before recovery. If the Chromebook belongs to work or school, contact your administrator before proceeding. See Google’s recovery instructions for current steps.
Create USB recovery media
For Google’s external recovery method, you need a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity, another Chromebook or a Windows or Mac computer with Chrome, and the Chromebook Recovery Utility. Creating recovery media erases the contents of the selected USB drive. If recovery reports errors, Google suggests trying another USB drive because some drives may not work reliably.
