ChromeOS’s Floating Workspace is an enterprise-focused feature intended to bring a user’s workspace from one Chromebook to another. The available policy documentation describes it launching browser windows from the user’s last-used device at login when an administrator enables it. It does not establish that the feature is generally available to personal Chromebook users or that it restores every app and desktop detail.

What is Floating Workspace on ChromeOS?

Floating Workspace is a ChromeOS feature for restoring a user’s work across devices. A 2022 report described an early concept for carrying tabs and windows between Chromebooks, but noted that development was at an early stage and release was uncertain. That report was not confirmation of a shipped consumer feature. Chrome Unboxed’s January 24, 2022 report captured the idea as it was then understood.

Later Chromium documentation describes a more specific, administrator-controlled behavior: launching browser windows from the user’s last-used device automatically at login. A Chromium commit from May 14, 2025 describes Floating Workspace as an enterprise feature that restores a user’s desk across devices, and notes that it conflicts with Full Restore. The policy’s browser-window description is more specific than the commit’s broader reference to a desk; neither source establishes restoration of every app, window arrangement, or desktop setting.

Does Chromebook sync open windows between devices?

Floating Workspace is designed to make browser windows from a user’s last-used device available on another device at login when the feature is enabled. The policy documentation does not promise that every open window, tab, app, or part of the desktop layout will follow the user. The Chromium policy definition for FloatingWorkspaceEnabled describes browser-window launch behavior, not a guarantee of complete session replication.

Who can enable Floating Workspace?

The policy is named FloatingWorkspaceEnabled and is an administrator policy. Its documentation lists support for ChromeOS 100 and later; that version floor does not by itself establish current availability on every device, channel, or organization’s deployment.

  • Enabled: the policy says browser windows from the user’s last-used device launch automatically upon login.
  • Disabled or unset: startup behavior is left to Full Restore settings.

A Chromium feature-flags source retrieved for this topic marks both FloatingWorkspace and FloatingWorkspaceV2 disabled by default in that source revision. This is implementation evidence for that revision, not proof that all managed deployments are unable to enable the feature or that every ChromeOS channel behaves identically. The Chromium feature-flag metadata is revision-specific.

How does it relate to Full Restore?

Floating Workspace and Full Restore affect startup restoration behavior. The policy delegates to Full Restore settings when Floating Workspace is disabled or unset. A May 14, 2025 Chromium change says the features conflict and avoids creating the Full Restore service when Floating Workspace is enabled. The Chromium change, “Don’t create Full Restore service when Floating Workspace is enabled,” documents that implementation decision.

Because the feature is administrator-controlled and conflicts with Full Restore, organizations should treat it as a managed ChromeOS configuration rather than assume it is a personal setting to switch on. The cited sources do not establish current rollout cohorts, end-user setup steps, or general availability for unmanaged Chromebooks.

What remains unclear

The early 2022 concept and later enterprise policy point to the same broad goal—continuing work across Chromebooks—but do not establish that the original consumer-facing vision became a generally available product. The cited Chromium sources do not settle present availability by channel, organization, device cohort, or region. They also do not confirm restoration beyond the browser windows named in the policy.
