If your Chromebook “bootloader unlock” is not working, first identify what you are trying to change. Most users mean enabling ChromeOS Developer Mode, but that is different from disabling firmware write protection or installing alternate firmware. The right fix depends on the Chromebook model, the screen you see, and whether the device is managed or carrier locked.
First identify what “bootloader unlock” means
Chromebooks do not have one universal bootloader-unlock procedure. Developer Mode relaxes Verified Boot restrictions and provides more access to ChromeOS; firmware modification changes a deeper part of the boot process. One does not automatically accomplish the other.

If you want to install another operating system, confirm that your model supports the specific boot method before changing anything. Developer Mode alone does not remove firmware write protection or guarantee alternate-OS support. If you are trying to enable Developer Mode
Use the recovery screen on supported keyboard Chromebooks
For a typical keyboard Chromebook, Google documents entering Recovery Mode with Esc + Refresh + Power. When the Recovery screen appears, ChromiumOS documents pressing Ctrl + D to begin the Developer Mode transition on supported keyboard devices. This is not a universal sequence: tablets use a different hardware-button process, and some models have a device-specific recovery entry method. Check for school or work management
Enterprise policy can block Developer Mode. If the Chromebook belongs to a school or employer, contact its administrator rather than trying to bypass management controls. ChromiumOS Developer mode guide
Check whether the Chromebook is carrier locked
Google says Developer Mode is unavailable on a carrier-locked Chromebook. Contact the carrier, original user, or seller about the lock. A Powerwash does not remove a carrier lock. Google: Unlock a carrier locked Chromebook

Back up before changing modes
Changing into or out of Developer Mode triggers a wipe of the device’s stateful partition, so save important files elsewhere before starting. ChromiumOS explicitly warns: “Before entering developer mode it is important to understand that transitioning to or from developer mode will trigger a Mode Transition Wipe which wipes the stateful partition of the device.” ChromiumOS Developer mode guide
If you mean firmware write protection or an alternate bootloader
Firmware write protection is separate from Developer Mode. Its implementation and removal procedures vary by model, so a generic instruction to remove a screw, disconnect a battery, move a jumper, or flash firmware is not safe to apply across Chromebooks. Identify the exact model and consult documentation that explicitly supports it before considering firmware changes. Do not open the Chromebook or remove components unless you have appropriate technical skill and reliable documentation for that exact model. If your goal is only to use Developer Mode, firmware modification is not the same step and may be unnecessary.
If ChromeOS is damaged, use recovery—not an unlock procedure
Chromebook recovery reinstalls ChromeOS; it is not a general bootloader unlock or a way around an administrator or carrier lock. Google says recovery permanently erases everything on the Chromebook’s hard drive, including downloaded files, so back up what you can first. Recovery media can be created on a USB flash drive. If the Chromebook does not accept the recovery drive, Google suggests trying another one because some USB drives do not work well. Google Chromebook recovery guide

- Recovery media can help: when ChromeOS itself needs to be reinstalled.
- Recovery media cannot: enable Developer Mode when policy blocks it, remove a carrier lock, or disable firmware write protection.
When to stop and get model-specific help
Before attempting firmware steps, gather the Chromebook’s exact model and the full text of the screen or error. Seek the device manufacturer’s support if the documented recovery or Developer Mode path fails, or if you cannot establish that firmware instructions apply to your model.
