Chromebooks can play sounds when you connect a charger and when the battery is running low. Google says the feature arrived in September 2023, so it is no longer a future update; the sounds and controls available to you can still depend on your ChromeOS version, device settings, and administrator policy.
What the Chromebook battery sounds mean
Google describes two kinds of audible battery cues: a sound when you plug in power and a warning chime when little charge time remains. The sounds are built into ChromeOS; you do not need to buy an accessory to use them.
When you plug in the charger
The sound reflects the battery state at the time you connect power. Google describes a distinct, sparkle-dusted sound at 80% or higher, with other versions for a medium charge of 16–79% and a low charge below 15%. These are Google’s published categories, not a promise that every Chromebook will produce an identical sound in every situation. Google’s account of the ChromeOS charging sound explains the design and categories.
When the battery is low
Google describes a triple-note warning when less than 15 minutes of charge time remain. That is a ChromeOS alert threshold, not an independently verified prediction of how long a particular Chromebook will run: actual remaining time can vary with the device and how it is being used.

How to turn charging or low-battery sounds off
ChromeOS has separate controls labeled “Charging sounds” and “Low battery sound,” as confirmed by Chromium’s settings strings. Google says users can change the sound setting, but the available controls and their state may vary by ChromeOS version and device management. Look in Settings for the charging and low-battery sound controls and switch off the sound you do not want; there is not one verified settings path that applies to every Chromebook.
On a school- or work-managed Chromebook, an administrator may control these sounds through policy. If a setting is missing or cannot be changed, ask your organization’s administrator rather than assuming the device is broken. ChromeOS 116 Enterprise and Education release notes document user controls and administrator policy, alongside planned alert thresholds. Those notes describe a release plan and do not establish identical behavior on every currently supported model.

What to check if you cannot find the setting
- Check your ChromeOS version: open Settings > About ChromeOS.
- Check for an update: use the update controls on that page. Google’s Chromebook update instructions explain how to check the version and update.
- Check whether the Chromebook is managed: if it belongs to a school or workplace, contact its administrator about sound settings or policies.
An update may change which controls are available, but it cannot be guaranteed to add a particular control to every Chromebook.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why Google added audible battery cues
Google says the sounds can help blind and low-vision users judge battery state without first consulting a screen reader. The design team also chose to start with a small, subtle set of sounds because ChromeOS users were not accustomed to system audio cues and Chromebooks are widely used in schools. Google’s design account describes that accessibility goal and the reasoning behind the restrained approach.
