If your Chromebook battery is draining quickly, start by lowering screen brightness, closing unused or demanding apps and tabs, and turning on Battery Saver when you need extra unplugged runtime. These steps reduce active power use; Google does not specify a universal amount of extra runtime they provide.
Quick changes that can reduce battery use
- Lower screen brightness to a comfortable level. A brighter display uses more power, and Battery Saver dims the display automatically.
- Close apps and tabs you are not using. Video, games, and other demanding work can keep the Chromebook busy.
- Turn on Battery Saver when getting more time unplugged matters more than full performance. In ChromeOS, open Settings → System preferences → Power and enable Battery Saver. If the path differs, search Settings for “Battery Saver.”
Google says Battery Saver lowers display brightness, turns off keyboard backlighting, enables Chrome Energy Saver, enables Android Battery Saver when apps are used, and throttles the CPU. It is unavailable while the Chromebook is plugged in and turns off automatically when charging begins. Menu wording and availability can vary by release, device, or administrator policy. Google’s Battery Saver instructions describe these changes, but do not promise a specific amount of added runtime.
Battery Saver and optimized charging do different jobs
Battery Saver aims to reduce power use during current unplugged use. Optimized charging is intended to support battery health over time, not to increase the charge available for the next unplugged session. Google explains that spending extended periods fully charged can reduce battery capacity over time. Google’s optimized charging instructions describe two charging options:

Support for these controls depends on the Chromebook and administrator policy. If you need a full charge, turn optimized charging off or use “Fully charge now,” if that option appears. Google’s 80% figures describe charging behavior, not a measured battery-life improvement.

What to check if the battery still drains quickly
Notice when the drain happens
Observe whether the battery falls quickly during active use or while the Chromebook is idle. Note whether the change began after you started a more demanding workload or installed software. There is no single established cause or expected runtime that applies to every Chromebook, so these observations help narrow down the situation without assuming a particular app or component is responsible.
Check for ChromeOS updates
- Open Settings → About ChromeOS.
- Select Check for updates.
- If an update is available, follow the on-screen instructions and restart if prompted to complete it.
Google’s update instructions explain how to check for ChromeOS updates. Updates bring current features and security improvements; an update is not a guaranteed fix for battery drain.

Collect device-specific information before seeking service
If runtime remains unusually short, record the Chromebook model and the conditions in which the battery drains, along with any battery diagnostic information available on the device. A replacement battery must match the specific model; there is no universal replacement threshold or compatible battery for an unspecified Chromebook.
