Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Chrome’s screenshot tool captures the page as it is already rendered; it does not choose a website’s language. To capture the intended version, open its localized URL or select the language on the site, confirm the rendered text, and only then take the screenshot. Chrome’s preferred-language and translation settings can affect what you see, but neither is guaranteed to override a site’s own language routing.
Why Chrome captures the wrong language
Several separate language controls can affect the page or browser. A screenshot records the rendered result, so the first task is to identify which control is producing the unexpected language.
| Control | What it changes | Does it change the page URL? |
|---|---|---|
| Website language selector or localized URL | The site’s own language version and content. | Often, if the site uses separate localized URLs; check the address bar. |
| Chrome preferred languages | A language preference a site may use when deciding what to serve. | Not by itself, though the website may redirect or route based on its own logic. |
| Chrome translation | The translated text rendered in the current page. | Usually it is a translated rendering of the current page, not a request for the site’s own localized version. |
| Chrome browser UI language | Chrome menus and interface, not necessarily website content. | No. |
| DevTools language preference | The DevTools interface locale. | No. |
Google recommends that multilingual sites use distinct URLs for language versions and let visitors switch through links. Its guidance says: “Avoid automatically redirecting users from one language version of a site to a different language version of a site.” A site may nevertheless use browser signals or saved preferences to decide what to display, so no Chrome setting guarantees a particular website language.

Get the intended language on the page first
- Check the address bar. Look for a language selector on the site or a known localized URL. Choose the intended version directly, then check whether the address changes or redirects.
- Use the site’s own language selector. Select the target language and wait for the page to finish loading. Confirm that the visible text is in the language you want before capturing it.
- Check whether a saved preference may be involved. If the site keeps switching back, open its language selector or direct localized URL in a private window. This is a diagnostic comparison, not proof that cookies caused the behavior.
- Review Chrome’s preferred languages if the site appears to use them. Open Chrome Settings → Languages. Add or reorder languages as needed; a site that supports multiple languages may use the preferred language order when choosing what to show.
- Check translation if the displayed text is being translated unexpectedly. In Chrome Settings → Languages → Google Translate, review translation options and the target language. You can also request translation using Chrome’s translate control or the page’s right-click menu.
- Capture only after checking the result. Use a viewport screenshot for the visible area or a full-page screenshot for the whole page.
Chrome’s browser UI language is a different setting: Chrome Help says the selection for the browser interface is available on Windows, while Chrome on Mac and Linux uses the system’s default language. Changing it does not necessarily change a website’s content.

Take a viewport or full-page screenshot in DevTools
Chrome DevTools can capture what is visible in the viewport or the full page. The screenshot command does not set the website’s language, so confirm the intended version is rendered first.
- Open the page in Chrome and select its language on the site, or navigate to the intended localized URL.
- Open DevTools and, if needed, enable Device Mode to set the viewport you want to capture.
- For a viewport capture, open the DevTools menu and choose the screenshot option for the current viewport. For a full-page capture, choose the full-size screenshot option.
- Open the resulting image and verify that it contains the intended language and page area.
DevTools also has a separate Language preference for its own interface. Changing that preference affects DevTools’ UI locale after DevTools is reloaded; it does not request a different language version of the website.

When you are diagnosing a multilingual site
A site can make language decisions using request information and its own routing rules. Chrome’s Accept-Language reduction changes how much language information is exposed in requests and through navigator.languages. Therefore, changing a Chrome preference or assuming a particular request header is present may not explain the site’s behavior. Inspect the site’s actual requests and routing before drawing a conclusion.

Quick Recap
Common problems and fixes
- The page returns to another language after selecting one: use the site’s direct localized URL if available, note whether it redirects, and compare behavior in a private window. The site may be applying its own routing or saved preference.
- The URL looks correct, but the text is in the wrong language: check whether Chrome translated the page, then inspect the site’s language selector and visible content before capturing.
- Chrome menus changed but the website did not: the browser UI language controls Chrome’s interface; use the website’s selector or localized URL for site content.
- DevTools changed language but the page did not: DevTools’ Language preference changes its interface locale, not the website’s language.
- The screenshot is in the wrong language even though the capture worked: the capture reflects the rendered page. Correct the page language first, wait for it to render, then repeat the capture.
- A developer expects Accept-Language to force a language: inspect actual requests and site routing. Browser language signals can be reduced, and the site decides how to use them.
