Chrome Remote Desktop’s web app was reported to gain rounded cards, a cleaner white background and a built-in light/dark switch in a redesign covered on January 29, 2021. The report described a web-app interface update—not a redesign of the Chrome browser—and it does not establish that the change is new in 2026.
What changed in the Chrome Remote Desktop web app
In its January 29, 2021 report, 9to5Google described the previous interface as using an earlier Material Design style, with sharper corners and a colorful background. The redesigned web app instead had a simpler white background and rounded cards.
The most useful addition for people looking for dark mode was a small sun/moon icon in the lower-right corner. According to the report, selecting it switched the app between light and dark appearances. The setting also carried into the in-session settings sidebar, which included controls such as video scaling.
These design details come from 9to5Google’s reporting. Google’s product page does not provide an official changelog for the 2021 redesign, so the visual changes should be understood as reported observations rather than official release notes.

Where dark mode appeared
The reported switch belonged to the Chrome Remote Desktop web app. It was not described as a Chrome browser theme setting. The report also said the selected appearance was reflected in the sidebar available during a remote session, alongside session controls such as video scaling.
If the interface you see today differs, the 2021 article alone cannot confirm the current layout or where a theme control is located. It documents what was reported at that time, not a current rollout announcement.

What Chrome Remote Desktop is for
Google currently presents Chrome Remote Desktop for two distinct tasks: remotely accessing your own home or work computer, and providing remote support to someone else. Its service page offers separate “Access my computer” and “Provide Support” actions and says connections can be made from a computer or an Android or iOS device. Google also identifies WebRTC among the open web technologies used by the service. These are descriptions of the current service, not capabilities introduced by the 2021 visual redesign. Access your own computer
For personal access, the computer you want to reach needs to be set up for remote access and available online. Google Play’s Android app listing instructs users to set up remote access on each computer using the Chrome Remote Desktop app from the Chrome Web Store, then open the Android app and choose an online computer. The listing showed an update date of February 25, 2026 when checked; that app information does not show that the 2021 web redesign changed Android behavior. Provide remote support
For helping another person, use the separate “Provide Support” option on Google’s service page rather than treating it as the same task as persistent access to your own computer. The available product information distinguishes the two entry points but does not establish comparative details about security, connection quality or feature availability across platforms.
