Phone Hub links an Android phone with a Chromebook, bringing selected phone controls and activity onto the Chromebook. A December 2020 preview showed polished onboarding visuals and suggested that the earlier “Continue Reading” concept had been incorporated into a feature called “Task Continuation.” Those visuals were a historical preview, not confirmation of the interface users see today.
What the December 2020 Phone Hub preview showed
In a December 16, 2020 report, Chrome Unboxed described newly surfaced Phone Hub onboarding visuals and connected them to the idea of resuming phone activity on a Chromebook. The report itself cautioned that the images did not establish the final design. They should be understood as a preview from that period, not a reliable guide to Phone Hub’s current appearance. Read the December 2020 report.
How “Continue Reading” relates to Task Continuation
“Continue Reading” described a straightforward goal: open a page on an Android phone and resume it on a Chromebook. The report suggested that this concept was being folded into Phone Hub as “Task Continuation.” Chromium’s settings text describes the feature as allowing users to resume in-app actions and Chrome tabs open on a connected Android phone from ChromeOS devices. In the settings, the related user-facing option is “View recent Chrome tabs from your phone.” See Chromium’s settings strings.
For recent Chrome tabs, Chromium’s settings copy says Chrome Sync must be turned on. That requirement applies to viewing those tabs; it should not be confused with Phone Hub’s broader connection setup.

What Phone Hub documents as doing now
Google’s current Chromebook help page describes Phone Hub as a way to connect a phone and Chromebook. Its listed capabilities include:
- Viewing phone signal and battery status.
- Using quick commands for the phone’s hotspot, silence mode, and locating the phone.
- Viewing recent Chrome tabs from the phone.
- Managing phone notifications.
- Accessing recent photos and screenshots.
- Streaming phone apps on supported setups.
Google also says Phone Hub features can be used while the Chromebook is offline. Its help page does not specify offline behavior separately for each feature, so that statement should not be taken to mean every remote or streamed function works identically without a connection. See Google’s Phone Hub help page.

Minimum compatibility and setup
Google’s published minimum requirements are ChromeOS M89 or later on the Chromebook and Android 5.1 or later on the phone. These are minimums, not a guarantee that every feature will be available on every device: device capabilities, settings, and managed-account restrictions can affect access.
- Turn on Bluetooth on both devices.
- On the Chromebook, select the Phone icon near the time display and choose “Get Started.”
- Accept the setup prompt, then set up the Android phone through Connected devices on the Chromebook.
- To view recent Chrome tabs through Task Continuation, turn on Chrome Sync.
If a work or school Chromebook cannot access a feature, Google advises contacting the administrator. In managed environments, administrators can also control whether task continuation is allowed; the policy’s effect depends on the organization’s configuration. Google’s setup instructions and requirements and Chrome Enterprise policy information provide the relevant details.

What this means for Chromebook owners
Phone Hub is a software feature for compatible Chromebook and Android phone combinations, not a reason by itself to replace either device. Check the Chromebook’s ChromeOS version and the phone’s Android version against Google’s minimums first. If those are met but an option is missing, account management or a device-specific limitation may be responsible.
Google introduced Phone Hub as a way to bring selected phone information and actions closer to the Chromebook experience. Its launch-era announcement gives that context, while Google’s support page is the more useful reference for documented present-day setup and capabilities. Google’s Phone Hub launch announcement.
