Neither Chrome Incognito nor a VPN makes you anonymous. Incognito mainly limits the browsing data Chrome saves on your device after you close all Incognito windows. A VPN changes how covered internet traffic is routed: it can reduce what your local network or internet provider can see and show websites the VPN’s IP address instead of yours. Choose based on who you want to keep activity from—and remember that a VPN shifts trust to its provider.

What each tool changes

Incognito is a private browsing session within Chrome, not a different internet connection. A VPN is a network-routing service: covered traffic passes through the VPN provider before reaching its destination.

Privacy question Chrome Incognito VPN
Main change Reduces browser records retained on your device after all Incognito windows close. Routes covered traffic through a VPN provider and changes the IP address destination sites see.
What websites can see Websites can observe your activity. Signing in identifies you to that site. Websites generally see the VPN’s IP address, but sign-ins and other tracking can still identify or recognize you.
What your ISP or local network can see Incognito does not change the network route or hide activity from them. They can generally see that you are using a VPN, but routing traffic through it can reduce their visibility into destinations and content.
Who you must trust Your device and browser session; Incognito does not prevent sites or network operators from observing activity. The VPN provider, which handles traffic routed through its service.
Important limits Downloads and bookmarks remain on your device. Coverage varies; speed, bandwidth limits, and blocked access may be concerns.

What Incognito does—and does not—hide

Chrome’s Incognito session keeps a separate set of browsing data. After you close all Incognito windows, Chrome removes session cookies and site data and does not retain a record of the sites visited in that session. Downloads and bookmarks remain on the device. See Google Chrome Help: Browse in Incognito mode.

That cleanup is local to Chrome; it does not erase activity recorded elsewhere. Websites can observe visits, and signing into an account tells that site who you are. Organizations managing the network—including an employer, school, or ISP—may also be able to observe activity. Google’s guidance puts it plainly: “While Incognito can help keep your browsing private on your device, it doesn’t make you invisible.” See How Chrome Incognito keeps your browsing private.

Does Incognito hide searches from your ISP?

No. Incognito does not change the route your internet traffic takes, so it does not hide your browsing from your ISP. HTTPS still encrypts website content in transit: an ISP should not be assumed to be able to read the contents of a secure page or form merely because you are using Incognito. Incognito and HTTPS address different parts of privacy—local browser records and data protection in transit, respectively.

What a VPN changes—and what it cannot

A VPN sends covered traffic through its provider. This can reduce what your ISP or local network sees about destinations and content, while destination websites see the VPN’s IP address rather than your usual one. The ISP can generally still tell that a VPN connection is in use. The provider sits in the traffic path, so using a VPN means placing trust in that provider’s handling of traffic. Mozilla explains the general routing and HTTPS distinction in its VPN explainer.

A VPN does not prevent account-based identification: if you sign in, the site knows which account is using it. Nor does changing your apparent IP address stop all tracking. Cookies and browser or device fingerprints can still help services recognize a browser. A VPN can improve privacy from some observers, but it is not an anonymity guarantee.

Does a VPN cover every app?

Not necessarily. Coverage depends on the service and how it works. A browser proxy or browser-only feature may cover traffic from that browser without routing other apps through the VPN. For example, Mozilla’s Firefox privacy notice says its proxy feature covers Firefox network traffic, not other apps; see the Firefox Privacy Notice. Check which apps and devices a service covers rather than assuming a browser feature is device-wide.

Choose by who you want to keep activity from

Other people using your device

Incognito can help keep a session’s browsing records, cookies, and site data from remaining in Chrome after all Incognito windows close. It is useful for reducing traces in the browser on a shared device, but downloads and bookmarks remain, and it does not prevent the sites you visit from seeing activity.

Your ISP, school, employer, or local network

Incognito does not conceal activity from a network operator. A VPN can reduce visibility into the destinations and content of covered traffic, but the operator can generally see that you are connected to a VPN. HTTPS protects website content in transit even without Incognito or a VPN; a VPN adds a separate encrypted route to the VPN provider.

Websites you visit

Incognito does not hide you from websites. A VPN changes the IP address they see, which can be useful when you do not want a site to see your usual IP, but it does not hide your account identity or eliminate other forms of tracking.

Trade-offs to check before relying on a VPN

  • Provider trust: The VPN provider handles traffic routed through its service. Compare privacy practices and look for independent security evaluation; do not treat a provider’s privacy claims as proof by themselves.
  • Coverage: Confirm whether the feature covers only a browser or also the other apps and devices whose traffic you want routed.
  • Performance and access: VPN use may slow connections, face bandwidth restrictions, or cause some services to block access. Provider quality varies.
