There is no Split View off switch documented in Google’s current Chrome Help for Android tablets. If Chrome has opened a second window, you can close it from Chrome’s window manager. To avoid the documented triggers, don’t drag a tab to the screen edge, and know that opening a new window while Chrome is full screen starts in split screen by default.
Why Chrome opens in Split View
Google’s Android tablet instructions describe two ways Chrome can enter split screen: dragging a tab to the edge of the screen to open it in a new window, or opening a new window while Chrome is full screen. In the latter case, Google says, “When Chrome is in full screen and you open a new window, it starts in split screen by default.” Chrome Help: Use split view in Chrome
Incognito mode is not itself identified as the cause. A Chrome Community user reported seeing split view after opening an Incognito tab from an existing Chrome page, but that forum post does not establish why it happened or whether the behavior applies to every tablet. Close the extra Chrome window
- In Chrome, open the More menu.
- Tap Manage windows.
- Select the unwanted window and choose the option to close it.
Chrome Help documents managing and closing windows. Menu labels and layout can vary by device. A closed window cannot be restored from the inactive-window list, according to Google’s Android tab-management guidance. Chrome Help: Manage tabs in Chrome on Android

Exit Incognito mode, if that is what you want
Closing the extra window and ending an Incognito session are different actions. To exit Incognito, switch to the Incognito tabs and close all of them. Chrome says that after the session ends it does not retain site data or a record of visited sites; websites and organizations managing the network, such as a school, employer, or internet provider, may still observe activity. Reduce the chance of opening Split View again
- Open a tab or window using Chrome’s menu instead of dragging a tab to the screen edge.
- If Chrome is full screen, expect a newly opened window to start in split screen, as described in Google’s Android tablet guidance.
Why the desktop setting is not the tablet fix
Chrome’s computer help describes a drag-and-drop split-screen preference under Settings > Appearance. Those instructions apply to desktop Chrome; Google’s Android tablet instructions do not document that preference as a tablet control. Chrome Help: Use split view in Chrome
