Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For a recurring screenshot of a URL at a fixed viewport, Chrome Headless’s command-line flags are the simpler choice. Choose Playwright when the job must navigate or interact with a page, wait for a particular condition, or control the screenshot in more detail. Neither is a universal speed or reliability winner: the official documentation does not publish a comparative benchmark. Scheduling itself comes from cron, CI, a task queue, or another runtime—not from either capture method.
Chrome Headless or Playwright: which fits your screenshot job?
| Need | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Capture a known URL at a fixed window size | Chrome Headless CLI | A short command can navigate and write a screenshot, with documented viewport-size and timeout flags. Chrome Headless command-line reference |
| Run page-level logic or choose exactly when and what to capture | Playwright | Its Page API combines navigation with a programmable screenshot call, including controls such as full-page capture, animation handling, masking, and background treatment. Playwright Page API |
| Keep recurring visual comparisons consistent | Either, with a pinned environment | Browser version and host environment affect rendering. Playwright specifically calls out operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode as potential sources of variation. Playwright visual comparisons |
| Run captures on a schedule | Either, launched by your scheduler | The capture tool renders the page; cron, CI, a queue, or a cloud scheduler launches the job. |
The practical distinction is workflow shape: use the CLI while a capture remains a simple command; use Playwright when you need browser automation logic or page-level capture controls. These are feature-based distinctions, not benchmark results.
Capture a scheduled screenshot with Chrome Headless
Install Chrome in the environment that will run the job, then invoke its executable with the URL, screenshot flag, and explicit viewport dimensions. The documented command-line reference also includes a timeout flag for capture operations. Check the installed Chrome version’s reference for the exact flag syntax and supported options.
chrome --headless --screenshot=shot.png --window-size=1440,1000 --timeout=10000 https://example.com
This captures the page at the specified window size and writes shot.png in the current working directory. Replace chrome with the executable name or path used by your operating system. The timeout value shown is an example, not a guarantee that a page will be fully rendered or that every site will finish loading within that period. See the Chrome Headless CLI reference for the documented flags.

Schedule the command outside Chrome
Put the command in a script and have your environment’s scheduler launch it. The scheduler is a deployment choice; Chrome’s capture documentation does not prescribe one. For example, a cron entry can run a script at a selected time, while a CI scheduler can run it on a recurring workflow. Configure the scheduler’s working directory and permissions so the browser can write the output.
For recurring runs, make the filename or destination unique enough to avoid accidentally overwriting a capture you need to retain. Decide how the job reports a nonzero exit or missing output, whether it retries, where artifacts are stored, and how long they are kept. Those policies depend on your operational needs rather than on a Chrome-specific requirement.
Capture a scheduled screenshot with Playwright
Install Playwright and its browser dependencies in the job environment. This Node.js example navigates to a URL, waits for the page’s load event, and writes a screenshot:
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 1000 },
});
await page.goto('https://example.com', {
waitUntil: 'load',
timeout: 30_000,
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'shot.png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Run the script from your scheduler, with the project’s installed Playwright package and browser available. The chosen load event is not a universal signal that a site’s content is visually settled: a page may continue fetching data, animating, or changing after it fires. Select a wait condition that matches the page and the purpose of the capture. The Page API documents navigation and screenshot options.

Use Playwright when a capture needs page-specific control
The screenshot API supports more than saving the current viewport. Depending on the job, you can capture the full page, mask changing regions, handle animations, and set output or background options. A page can also be driven through browser actions before the screenshot. Prefer a targeted wait—such as waiting for a selector that marks the content you need—when a generic load event is too early or too broad.
These controls make Playwright a better fit for pages with multi-step navigation or dynamic content, but they also mean you must define the capture procedure carefully. If the page, selector, or interaction changes, update the script and validate the resulting image.
Choose the browser build and headless mode deliberately
With Chrome Headless, the browser is the installed Chrome build, so behavior follows that version. With Playwright, browser choice is an explicit part of the setup. Playwright documents its managed Chromium build and a separate Chromium headless shell used by default for headless Chromium. The chromium channel opts into new headless mode; Playwright also supports branded Chrome and Edge channels. Enterprise browser policies can affect control of branded browsers. Playwright browser documentation
For CI environments that only need the headless shell, Playwright documents --only-shell; for new headless mode it documents --no-shell. These are browser-install options, not screenshot-page flags. Check the current browser documentation when choosing a mode or channel, and keep the choice consistent across scheduled runs.

Playwright’s browser page relays Chrome documentation’s characterization of new headless mode as “more authentic, reliable, and offers more features.” That is an attributed description, not a comparative measurement showing that it is faster or more reliable than another screenshot workflow.
Make scheduled captures repeatable
A scheduled job can run successfully and still produce a different image. Rendering can vary with the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Playwright recommends using the same environment to generate and check visual baselines. Visual comparison guidance
- Pin the browser version and OS image where practical; avoid silently changing browser channels between runs.
- Keep fonts and rendering settings stable, and use the same host setup for captures you intend to compare.
- Set the viewport explicitly. For Playwright, use the same viewport and screenshot options on each run; for Chrome CLI, set the window size.
- Choose a meaningful readiness condition. A fixed delay is simple but may be wasteful or insufficient; a selector or page-specific condition is often more useful for dynamic pages.
- For animations or volatile regions, use Playwright’s animation and masking controls or a screenshot stylesheet in visual comparison tests.
- If you intentionally compare different operating systems or browser modes, keep separate baselines instead of treating their output as interchangeable.
Playwright’s CI guidance notes that browsers launch headlessly by default and offers advice for launch failures. It also cautions that caching browser binaries may not save time: restoring a cache can take about as long as downloading, and Linux dependencies still need installation. Treat that as Playwright’s guidance, not a measurement that applies to every CI system. Playwright CI documentation

The browser command or Playwright launch fails
Check that the executable or Playwright browser is installed in the scheduled environment, that required Linux dependencies are present, and that the job has permission to launch a browser. For Playwright, consult the CI guidance for launch troubleshooting. A machine that works interactively may differ from the scheduler’s container or user account.
The screenshot is blank, incomplete, or missing content
Confirm that navigation reached the intended URL and that the capture waits for the content the page actually needs. A load event or timeout alone may not indicate that client-rendered content has settled. With Playwright, wait for a relevant selector or condition; with either method, review the page’s behavior and logs in the same environment that runs the scheduled job.
The output is saved somewhere unexpected
Relative filenames are resolved from the process’s working directory, which may differ under cron or CI. Set an explicit working directory or use an absolute output path, then verify that the scheduled user can write to it.

Images differ from one run to another
Check for changes to browser version, operating system, fonts, viewport, headless mode, hardware, and page content. Playwright browser installation or CI setup takes longer than expected
Verify that browser dependencies are installed for the operating system and consider whether caching actually helps in your CI provider.
