What does “access your data for all websites” mean? It means an extension has permission to interact with pages across the websites you visit, within the permission’s technical scope. Depending on the extension and its behavior, that access can allow it to read or modify page content and information you enter. It does not, by itself, prove that the extension collects or sends that information.

Chrome and Firefox both let you limit website access, but use different permission language and controls. You can review an extension’s requested access, restrict it to selected sites where supported, and assess its privacy disclosures separately from its permissions.

What website-access permissions allow

A website-access permission describes what an extension is technically allowed to do on matching pages; it is not a report of what the extension actually does with data. Broad access can enable an extension to read or change page content and information entered into pages. Mozilla gives usernames and passwords as examples of sensitive inputs that could be exposed to an add-on with broad access. This is a capability, not proof that every extension reads or collects credentials.

Website access is also distinct from access to a browser’s saved passwords or cookies, and it does not establish whether an extension stores, transmits, or sells data. Those practices need to be assessed separately.

How Chrome and Firefox describe site access

Question Chrome Firefox
Broad access Access to data on all the websites you visit, when requested by the extension. “Access your data for all websites.”
Narrower access Website access can be limited to a list of websites; Chrome’s controls also include running on click. “Access your data for sites in the ‘named’ domain” or “Access your data for a specific site.”
Where permissions are defined Extensions declare host permissions using URL match patterns. See Chrome’s Declare permissions guide. WebExtensions use host permissions; users can grant or revoke host access. See MDN’s host_permissions documentation.

Chrome’s site-access options are described in Google Chrome Help’s explanation of extension permissions. Exact labels and settings can vary by browser version and platform, so use the extension’s current settings rather than relying on an old screenshot or menu path.

When an extension asks for access

Chrome: permissions and temporary access

Chrome extensions declare the site patterns they may access. Depending on the APIs an extension uses, host permissions can support actions such as injecting content into matching pages or making cross-origin requests from extension contexts. Other capabilities may require additional permissions; for example, cookie access also requires the relevant API permission. A host permission is therefore not a blanket statement that an extension has every capability associated with browsing.

Chrome supports optional permissions that an extension can request at runtime, rather than asking for every possible permission during installation. Its activeTab permission is another narrower model: after a user invokes the extension, it grants temporary access to the active tab. Chrome says that access ends when the user navigates away or closes the tab. It is useful for some user-triggered actions, but not a replacement for persistent access in every extension’s design. See Chrome’s user privacy guidance.

Firefox: requested and optional permissions

Mozilla distinguishes access to all websites from access to a named domain or a specific site. An add-on may request an optional permission when a feature first needs it, and users can review permissions in Add-ons Manager, in the extension’s details and its Permissions or Permissions and data area. Optional permissions may be presented as toggles. The precise labels can differ across Firefox versions.

Mozilla explains these permission messages and examples, including password managers, shopping tools, and ad blockers, in About permission request messages for Firefox extensions. The underlying WebExtensions model also supports optional host permissions requested at runtime; details are in MDN’s host_permissions documentation.

How to review and narrow an extension’s access

On desktop, open the browser’s extensions manager, select the extension, then inspect its requested permissions and website-access setting. Menu names and exact clicks differ across versions and operating systems, so look for the extension’s site-access or permissions controls in its current details page.

  1. Identify the feature. Decide which function you need and which websites it must work on.
  2. Compare the request with that purpose. Check whether the extension asks for all sites, a domain, or a specific site, and whether that scope makes sense for the feature.
  3. Choose the narrowest usable option. If available, restrict access to selected sites or run the extension on click instead of allowing access everywhere.
  4. Review optional grants. Revisit permissions after enabling features that may request additional access; remove grants you no longer need.
  5. Check privacy disclosures separately. Read the developer’s data-collection information and consider whether the extension’s purpose and developer are trustworthy.
  6. Remove extensions you no longer use. An unneeded extension has no reason to retain access to sites.

What permissions can—and cannot—tell you about privacy

Broader access creates a wider opportunity to interact with pages than access limited to one site. That makes permission breadth useful when assessing risk, but it cannot establish whether an extension is benign or malicious, or whether it collects, retains, or sends data. Google recommends minimizing permissions and treats handling of collected user information as a separate privacy concern. Mozilla likewise provides data-collection information separately from permission prompts.

For Firefox 140 and later, Mozilla’s extension data-collection explanation distinguishes personal data, such as browsing activity and website content, from technical and interaction data; it also describes controls for optional data collection in extension settings. That description is specific to Firefox 140 and later, not a claim about earlier versions. See Mozilla’s Extension data collection page.

Neither browser’s permission model makes an extension inherently safe. Consider the feature, requested site scope, developer, and data disclosures together. A permission is a boundary on capability—not a privacy audit or a guarantee about an extension’s actual behavior.
