In a December 10, 2019 announcement, Google described three separate Chrome protections: alerts when credentials appeared in known data breaches, real-time desktop warnings for more phishing sites, and expanded warnings when users entered saved passwords on suspected phishing pages. Google said the features would roll out gradually. The announcement does not itself confirm that these changes were specific to Chrome 79, so that version attribution should be treated as unverified.
What Chrome’s 2019 password and phishing protections did
Google’s announcement described distinct protections with different triggers. A breach alert responded to compromised credentials; Safe Browsing warned about dangerous sites; and predictive phishing protection reacted when a user entered a saved password on a suspected phishing page. These were warning systems, not a guarantee that every harmful site or stolen credential would be detected.
Alerts for passwords found in data breaches
Google said Chrome would alert users if credentials they typed had been compromised in a data breach on a site or app. It recommended changing the affected password anywhere it had been reused. At the time, Google described a control in Chrome Settings under “Sync and Google Services” and said the feature was gradually rolling out to people signed in to Chrome. Those are Google’s 2019 labels and availability details, not confirmation of today’s settings or behavior. Google’s December 10, 2019 announcement.
Real-time desktop warnings for phishing sites
Google said Safe Browsing’s unsafe-site list refreshed every 30 minutes at the time, but phishing sites could change domains quickly or evade crawlers. The company announced real-time phishing protection for desktop Chrome and claimed it would warn users in 30 percent more cases. Google said the initial rollout applied to users who had “Make searches and browsing better” enabled. The 30 percent figure is Google’s claim from 2019, not an independent measurement or a current performance guarantee. Google’s announcement.

Expanded warnings when entering saved passwords
Google said predictive phishing protection had existed since 2017 for people signed in to Chrome with Sync enabled who entered their Google Account password on a suspected phishing site. The 2019 change expanded that protection to Google Account passwords when users were signed in even without Sync, and to all passwords stored in Chrome’s password manager. Google said hundreds of millions more users would benefit; that was the company’s estimate, not an independently measured count. Google’s announcement.
Clearer Chrome profile indicator
Google also announced a desktop profile visual update intended to help users see which Chrome profile was active when saving passwords. It said this visual change would not alter existing Sync settings. Google’s announcement.

Did Chrome tell you if your password was stolen?
In Google’s 2019 description, Chrome could warn that credentials had been exposed in a known data breach, and could recommend changing reused passwords. That is more precise than saying Chrome could detect every stolen password: the announcement describes checking against known compromised credentials, not discovering every theft or monitoring every account in real time. The same post quoted Group Product Manager AbdelKarim Mardini: “If your credentials were compromised, we recommend to change them immediately.”
Google had also described its Password Checkup Chrome extension earlier that year. On October 2, 2019, it reported that the extension had more than 1 million downloads and that nearly half of those users had been warned. These are historical figures reported by Google about the extension, not statistics for Chrome’s later built-in protections or present-day usage. Did these alerts require Chrome Sync?
Not all of the protections had the same account conditions in Google’s announcement:
- Breach alerts: Google described a gradual rollout to users signed in to Chrome, with a control under “Sync and Google Services.”
- Real-time desktop phishing protection: The initial rollout depended on “Make searches and browsing better” being enabled; the announcement did not state that Sync was required.
- Predictive password-entry warnings: Google expanded coverage to signed-in users even without Sync, and to passwords stored in Chrome’s password manager. The earlier, narrower protection had required Sync for the Google Account-password case.
These conditions reflect the December 2019 announcement. They should not be used as a guide to current Chrome settings or account requirements.

Was this specifically a Chrome 79 update?
The Google post central to these changes is dated December 10, 2019, but it does not explicitly name Chrome 79. It says the features would roll out gradually over the following weeks. The version number in the original headline therefore cannot be verified from that announcement alone; it is safest to describe these as protections Google announced for Chrome in December 2019 rather than assert that every feature arrived in Chrome 79.
Quick Recap
What the announcement does—and does not—establish
- Google said Safe Browsing protected 4 billion devices every day at the time. This was a historical company-reported figure, not a current total or independent measurement. Google’s December 2019 announcement.
- The announcement documented planned protections and gradual rollout, not proof that every eligible user received them immediately.
- A warning is a useful signal to stop and verify, but the post does not claim that warnings catch every phishing site or every compromised password.
- The settings names, scope, and rollout details above belong to the 2019 announcement. The cited sources do not establish current Chrome menus or feature availability.
