Chrome 94 reached the desktop stable channel on September 21, 2021, bringing an optional HTTPS-First security mode alongside changes for web developers. Contemporary coverage also reported a Sharing Hub, a “What’s New” page and redesigned Settings, but Google’s release notes did not establish that those interface changes appeared for every user. The release rolled out in stages, and Android received a separate build later that week.

When Chrome 94 rolled out

Google announced desktop Chrome 94 stable on September 21, 2021, for Windows, Mac and Linux. The initial build was 94.0.4606.54, and Google said availability would expand over the coming days and weeks rather than reach everyone at once. The announcement also covered an extended-stable release for Windows and Mac. Google’s desktop stable-channel notice

Chrome 94 was planned as the first stable release under Google’s move from a six-week to a four-week release schedule. The September 21 date was the actual desktop stable promotion date; the earlier cadence announcement described the plan and noted that schedules could change. Google’s release-cadence announcement

Android followed on September 23, when Google announced Chrome 94.0.4606.61 and said it would become available through Google Play over the next few days. That separate notice does not establish that Android received every desktop feature at the same time. Google’s Android release notice

What Chrome 94 changed for browser users

HTTPS-First Mode was an optional security setting

HTTPS-First Mode attempted to open sites using HTTPS. If a secure connection was unavailable, Chrome displayed a full-page warning before falling back to HTTP. It was an option, not a change Google said was automatically enabled for all Chrome users. Chrome Security’s explanation of HTTPS-First Mode

Google later used the label “Always Use Secure Connections” for related browser behavior. That later terminology should not be mistaken for the name of the Chrome 94 feature. Google’s later explanation of secure-connection settings

Sharing Hub, “What’s New” and Settings changes were not guaranteed

A September 23, 2021 report associated Chrome 94 with a Sharing Hub, a “What’s New” page and a redesigned Settings interface. Treat these as reported, rollout-dependent changes: Google’s desktop release notice does not confirm that every user, platform or installation received them together. Contemporary report on Chrome 94’s interface changes

Google had described sharing-related and New Tab Page card experiments in Chrome Beta in August 2021, noting that Beta features were still in development and could change based on feedback. That Beta discussion is context for experimentation, not proof that a specific interface feature was universally enabled in stable Chrome 94. Google’s August 2021 Chrome Beta update

Developer-facing changes in Chrome 94

Google’s Chrome 94 platform roundup covered changes intended mainly for people building websites and web apps. They were not a bundle of consumer settings users needed to switch on. Chrome 94 developer roundup

  • Canvas color management: sRGB became the default canvas color space, affecting how web content represents color in canvas elements.
  • WebCodecs: a low-level interface to built-in audio and video codecs, aimed at web applications that need more direct media processing.
  • WebGPU: began as an origin trial, so it was an experimental availability path rather than a generally released browser capability.
  • scrollbar-gutter: a CSS property allowing developers to control space reserved around scrollbars, which can help avoid layout shifts as scrollbars appear.
  • Virtual Keyboard API: gave web apps an interface for interacting with the on-screen keyboard, particularly relevant to touch devices.
  • WebSQL: was deprecated in third-party contexts. Google’s article said removal was expected in Chrome 97; this was a stated future plan at the time of the Chrome 94 announcement.

How to interpret the Chrome 94 announcement

The update combined three different kinds of news: the move to a faster stable-release cadence, an optional security mode, and web-platform changes for developers. The most visible interface claims—Sharing Hub, “What’s New” and Settings redesign—came from contemporary reporting and should be read as staged-rollout features, not a universal checklist of what every Chrome 94 installation displayed.
