Chrome 112 stopped Chrome Apps from functioning on Windows, Mac, and Linux. ChromeOS followed a separate, longer phase-out schedule: Google’s current enterprise guidance schedules the last standard release with Chrome App support for January 2028, with Long-term Support devices scheduled through October 2028. For most replacements, Google recommends a web application—often a Progressive Web App (PWA)—while Chrome Extensions remain an option when web technologies cannot cover a required capability.

What changed in Chrome 112?

Chrome 112 was the cutoff for Chrome Apps on Windows, Mac, and Linux: Google’s Chrome 112 Enterprise and Education release notes said the apps would stop functioning in Chrome 112 or later on those desktop operating systems. The change followed a longer phase-out. Google deprecated Chrome Apps in 2020, said in June 2022 that the Chrome Web Store would stop offering installations for Windows, Mac, and Linux, and announced in July 2022 that support on those platforms would end. A March 2023 support announcement said the apps would no longer be launchable there.

This desktop cutoff did not apply on the same timetable to ChromeOS. Google’s ChromeOS enterprise guidance schedules the beginning of phase-out for July 2025, the last standard ChromeOS release with Chrome App support for January 2028, and the end of Long-term Support access for October 2028. These are the dates in Google’s current guidance; they are not evidence that every ChromeOS device loses support at once.

What should replace a Chrome App?

Google’s stated preference is clear: “Web applications are the preferred alternative for migrating from Chrome Apps.” A web application might be an installable PWA or a conventional site opened in the browser. Choose based on the app’s actual APIs and operating requirements, rather than assuming every Chrome App has a one-to-one replacement.

Option Best fit Key trade-offs
PWA or other web application Most app functionality that can be rebuilt with modern web APIs. Check API coverage, offline behavior, and background requirements. Installation is optional; users may open the app directly in a browser.
Chrome Extension Cases where the web platform cannot provide a required capability, including some background tasks with no user interface. It remains subject to extension-platform rules and APIs; it is not automatically a drop-in replacement for an entire Chrome App.
Ordinary browser web app Experiences that do not need installation or deeper app-like OS integration. It runs in the browser and may offer less OS integration than an installed app.

For a feature-by-feature assessment, use Chromium’s Chrome Apps migration reference, which maps Chrome App APIs to web-platform support levels. Treat each required capability as a migration question: whether the web platform supports it, whether the support is sufficient for the app, and whether an extension is necessary for any remaining gap.

How to choose between a PWA, web app, and extension

Start with the behavior users depend on, then compare candidates across the dimensions that commonly determine whether a migration will work:

  • API coverage: List the Chrome App APIs the app uses and verify each against the migration reference. A visual redesign does not solve a missing platform capability.
  • Offline use: Identify which screens and tasks must work without a network connection, then test that behavior in the proposed web implementation.
  • Background execution: Determine whether work must continue without an open app window or user interface. This is one of the cases where an extension may be needed if web APIs do not suffice.
  • Installation and management: Decide whether users may install the app themselves or whether the organization needs to deploy it centrally. A web application can also be used without installation.
  • OS integration: Check the specific integration users rely on; do not assume a PWA or ordinary site reproduces every Chrome App behavior.
  • Rewrite effort: Estimate the work needed to replace unsupported APIs and validate the new user experience. The best option is the one that meets requirements with supportable web or extension capabilities, not necessarily the one with the most app-like appearance.

How should organizations force-install the replacement?

For an organization replacing a force-installed Chrome App with a web application, Google’s migration guidance calls for replacing the ExtensionInstallForcelist policy with WebAppInstallForceList, configured with the replacement web app’s URL. Administrators should inventory deployed apps and relevant user data before cutover, tell users how to find and launch the replacement, and validate managed-device behavior in the target ChromeOS channels.

  1. Inventory the current deployment: Identify force-installed Chrome Apps, their users, and any user data or workflows that need to carry over.
  2. Select and validate the replacement: Compare app requirements with web-platform API support; use an extension only where a required capability is not adequately supported on the web.
  3. Update deployment policy: For a web app replacement, move the force-install configuration from ExtensionInstallForcelist to WebAppInstallForceList and specify the replacement app URL, following Google’s ChromeOS enterprise migration guidance.
  4. Test and communicate: Check installation and launch behavior on managed devices in the ChromeOS channels you target, then communicate the new launch path to users before retiring the old one.

What ChromeOS users should know about the schedule

ChromeOS retained support beyond the desktop Chrome 112 cutoff. Google’s current enterprise timeline places the first phase-out stage in July 2025, the last standard ChromeOS release with Chrome App support in January 2028, and Long-term Support access through October 2028. Because these milestones distinguish standard releases from LTS devices, administrators should plan against the schedule for their device channel rather than treating Chrome 112 as a universal Chrome App shutdown date.
