Chrome 109 is the last version that supports Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1. Google made Chrome 110 require Windows 10 or later, and it stopped releasing Chrome updates for the older systems. An existing installation may still open, but it will not receive newer Chrome security and feature updates. Since Windows 10 support also ended on October 14, 2025, the safest next step is to check whether your computer can run Windows 11, review Microsoft’s Windows 10 Extended Security Updates option if you need a temporary bridge, or replace hardware that cannot run a supported operating system.

Can you still use Chrome on Windows 7 or Windows 8.1?

Possibly. Google said older Chrome versions would continue to work on Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1, so an installed copy may still launch and load websites. But it will not receive further Chrome releases on those operating systems. That distinction matters: a browser that opens is not necessarily receiving current security fixes or features.

Google announced the cutoff on October 24, 2022, and updated its announcement through January 10, 2023. The announcement identified Chrome 110, scheduled at the time for February 7, 2023, as the first release requiring Windows 10 or later. Google’s Chrome system requirements continue to identify Chrome 109 as the last version for Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1. The date and version numbers describe that historical cutoff, not a current release schedule.

What was the last Chrome version for Windows 7 and 8.1?

Chrome 109. It is the final Chrome version Google supports on Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1. Chrome 110 and later require Windows 10 or a newer supported Windows version, according to Google’s system requirements.

If Chrome will not update on one of those older systems, reinstalling Chrome 109 or finding another copy of its installer will not restore ongoing Chrome updates. The barrier is the operating system’s eligibility, not simply a broken update setting. Google’s announcement says it would not issue further releases for users on Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1.

Why upgrading only to Windows 10 is no longer a complete fix

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, Microsoft says. A Windows 10 PC still works, but it no longer receives routine feature and security updates or technical support under ordinary support. Microsoft warns that continuing without updates can leave a device more exposed to malware and other security risks. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 end-of-support guidance.

  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

That makes Windows 10 a possible short-term stop rather than a straightforward long-term destination. Microsoft offers consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) for eligible enrolled Windows 10 devices through October 12, 2027, according to its support guidance. Eligibility, enrollment terms, and regional availability can matter; check Microsoft’s current terms for your device and location before relying on ESU.

Check whether your PC can run Windows 11

Do not assume a Windows 7 or 8.1 computer is eligible for Windows 11, or that it can upgrade directly. Microsoft’s minimum requirements include a compatible processor, at least 4 GB of RAM, and at least 64 GB of storage, among other conditions. Use Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements and its PC Health Check app or Windows Update eligibility check to assess the actual device.

  1. Check which Windows edition is installed. Confirm the PC is running Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1, or Windows 10 rather than relying on the browser’s update message alone.
  2. Check Windows 11 compatibility. Use Microsoft’s PC Health Check app or the eligibility check in Windows Update, and review the full Windows 11 system requirements.
  3. If eligible, follow Microsoft’s upgrade guidance. Confirm your files are backed up and use Microsoft’s current Windows 11 download and installation instructions.
  4. If not eligible, choose a supported path. If you need to keep the PC temporarily, check whether it qualifies for consumer Windows 10 ESU and what enrollment entails. If it cannot run a supported operating system, consider replacing it with a computer that does.

Which next step makes sense?

Option When it fits Security and support outlook What to weigh
Upgrade to Windows 11 The PC passes Microsoft’s compatibility checks and performs adequately for your needs. A supported operating system allows you to use current Windows and Chrome releases, subject to their ongoing support. Back up files and confirm the upgrade route and device performance before proceeding.
Use Windows 10 with consumer ESU You need more time with a Windows 10 PC and it meets Microsoft’s current enrollment terms. Microsoft says enrolled consumer devices can receive ESU through October 12, 2027; this is a limited bridge, not a return to ordinary Windows 10 support. Check current eligibility, terms, and regional availability directly with Microsoft.
Replace the computer The existing hardware cannot run a supported operating system, or its performance no longer meets your needs. A PC that supports a currently supported Windows version can receive its available OS and browser updates. Compare compatibility, memory, storage, performance, and total cost against upgrading or a temporary ESU bridge.

Microsoft lists upgrading an eligible PC, using consumer ESU where available, and replacing an ineligible device among the options in its Windows 10 support guidance. The right choice depends on your computer’s eligibility and condition; a new PC is not necessary for everyone.

What not to assume

  • “It still opens, so it is current.” Chrome can continue to launch without receiving new releases for Windows 7 or 8.1.
  • “A Windows 10 upgrade solves support indefinitely.” Windows 10’s ordinary support ended in 2025; ESU has separate terms and a defined end date.
  • “Every old PC can upgrade to Windows 11.” Eligibility depends on the particular hardware and Microsoft’s requirements.
  • “Another browser is automatically a secure workaround.” Browser support on Windows 7 and 8.1 varies, and a current long-term alternative is not established here. Check the browser maker’s current operating-system support before relying on one.
