Chrome 108 reached the stable desktop channel on November 29, 2022, for Windows, Mac, and Linux, with rollout continuing over the following days and weeks. Its main developer changes covered responsive viewport units, variable color fonts, and a breaking change to part of the FileSystem API. Some users also began receiving Memory Saver and Energy Saver, but those features were not enabled for everyone at once.
When did Chrome 108 come out?
Google announced Chrome 108 for Windows, Mac, and Linux on November 29, 2022. The listed desktop builds were 108.0.5359.71 for Mac and Linux, and 108.0.5359.71 or 108.0.5359.72 for Windows. Google said the stable update would roll out over the coming days and weeks. Google’s desktop stable-channel announcement also reported 31 security fixes, including a high-severity type-confusion issue in V8, CVE-2022-4174.
For Android, Google announced version 108.0.5359.61 on the same date, with availability through Google Play expected over the following days. The Android release announcement described stability and performance improvements and said Android releases include the corresponding desktop security fixes unless otherwise noted. Google’s Android release note gives those platform-specific details.
What changed for web developers?
Viewport units that adapt to mobile browser controls
Chrome 108 added small, large, and dynamic viewport units, alongside the logical vi and vb units. The new options address layouts that shift when mobile browser controls—such as the address bar—expand or collapse:

sv*units use the small viewport, with browser interface elements expanded.lv*units use the large viewport, with those elements collapsed.dv*units are dynamic and change as the browser interface changes.
This gives developers more ways to size content against the usable screen, particularly on mobile. Google’s Chrome 108 highlights summarize the change: “The new viewport units give you more control to create adaptive UIs.”
Variable support for COLRv1 color fonts
Chrome had supported COLRv1 color vector fonts since Chrome 98, initially with static functionality. Chrome 108 added support for OpenType Variations in COLRv1, allowing properties such as gradients and transforms to vary along font axes. CSS @supports also gained the font-tech() and font-format() conditions, which let sites detect font capabilities and choose fallbacks. These are version-specific release details, not a statement of current browser support.

FileSystemSyncAccessHandle methods became synchronous
Chrome 108 changed truncate(), getSize(), flush(), and close() on FileSystemSyncAccessHandle from asynchronous to synchronous methods. The change aligned them with the interface’s synchronous read and write methods and made the API more suitable for POSIX-like interfaces used by WebAssembly applications.
This is the release’s clearest compatibility risk: code that expects a promise from one of these methods—for example, by calling .then()—must be updated to use the synchronous result or behavior. Google’s enterprise notes described a temporary policy to restore the asynchronous interface while applications were updated; that policy was available only until Chrome 110. See the Chrome 108 highlights and Chrome Enterprise policy documentation.

Android layouts and the on-screen keyboard
Chrome 108 on Android changed the default keyboard behavior: opening the on-screen keyboard resized the visual viewport rather than the initial containing block. Developers whose layouts depend on the previous behavior could use the interactive-widget meta-viewport key to opt out.
What might browser users have noticed?
Memory Saver and Energy Saver rolled out gradually
Google’s enterprise and education notes said Memory Saver and Energy Saver were rolling out to some Chrome users on Windows, Mac, and ChromeOS. Memory Saver was designed to improve Chrome performance; Energy Saver was intended to extend battery life. The notes did not report a measured performance or battery-life gain. Users could find controls under Settings > Performance, while administrators had policies to manage the modes and a URL-pattern policy to protect tabs from being discarded. See the Chrome Enterprise and Education release notes.

Other platform-specific updates
The enterprise notes also listed changes that depended on the platform or user context, rather than applying uniformly across Chrome:
- Desktop Google Password Manager gained notes attached to saved passwords; iOS received an updated password list and settings experience.
- Windows installation added taskbar pinning.
- Offline Progressive Web Apps and Trusted Web Activities without a custom offline experience gained default error pages.
- The cookies and site data dialog was redesigned.
- Chrome on Linux began using Chrome’s built-in DNS client by default.
- Price tracking could notify users by email or mobile when a tracked product’s price dropped. It required signing in with Sync and Web & App activity enabled, and tracked products were saved alongside bookmarks with Sync.
Availability varied by platform, rollout, and—in the case of price tracking—account settings. The enterprise notes do not establish that every Chrome 108 user received every feature.
