A “missing Storybook” failure in Chromatic CI can mean several different things: the CLI cannot find the build script, Storybook’s production build fails, the output directory is not a valid built Storybook, or a dependency is missing when stories render. Check the exact CLI message first, then reproduce the production build locally; do not assume the problem is a Chromatic service issue.
Identify which “missing Storybook” failure you have
Chromatic reports distinct failure categories, including a missing build script, a failed or unsuccessful Storybook start, an invalid Storybook build, and a missing dependency. The precise log message determines which branch to follow. A generic CI failure alone does not establish that the build script is missing. See Chromatic’s CLI troubleshooting guide.
| Observed failure | First check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| “Build script not found” | Does package.json define the expected build script? |
Add the script or configure its actual name with buildScriptName. For a custom command, configure buildCommand and the output directory. |
| “Failed to build Storybook” or a similar build error | Does the production build fail locally? | Resolve the Storybook build error, then rerun Chromatic. |
| Missing or undefined dependency while stories render | Is the package declared, installed, and included in the bundler configuration? | Correct the dependency or configuration; use Storybook Doctor to check for consistency problems. |
| Invalid or unusable built Storybook | Does the configured output directory contain a valid production Storybook? | Build and serve it locally. If that succeeds, point Chromatic to that directory explicitly. |
| Cause remains unclear | Have you reproduced the production build and checked the relevant configuration? | Rerun with debug and diagnostics enabled, and retain the logs. |
Reproduce the production build locally
Chromatic’s visual testing workflow uses a production Storybook build, which can expose errors that do not appear in storybook dev. Run the same build command your repository or CI uses. Chromatic’s documented example is:
npm run build-storybook
npx http-server storybook-static -o
Use your project’s actual command and output directory if they differ. Serving the generated directory lets you check that the built Storybook opens and its stories load, rather than relying on the development server as a substitute. Chromatic’s quickstart explains the production-build workflow.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Fix a missing build script or configure a custom build
Use the standard package script
Chromatic’s default is the build-storybook script. A typical package script invokes storybook build. Check the scripts in package.json and make sure the command runs in CI with the repository’s installed dependencies.
Tell Chromatic the real script name
If your package uses a different script name, set buildScriptName in Chromatic’s configuration or pass --build-script-name to the CLI. This is for changing which package script Chromatic runs; it is not the same as handing Chromatic an already-built directory.

Use a custom build command
If the build is not a package script, configure buildCommand and specify the directory where that command writes the Storybook output. Check the current option syntax in Chromatic’s configuration reference.
Resolve production build and dependency errors
If the local production build fails, fix that error before changing Chromatic settings. Chromatic’s CLI guidance says of a failed Storybook build: “This is a problem with your Storybook build, not with Chromatic.”

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
For an undefined reference or missing package during production rendering, check that the dependency is declared in the project, installed in the CI environment, and included correctly by the bundler configuration. A dependency that happens to be available in a local development setup may still be absent from the production build.

Chromatic’s quickstart says that, from Storybook 7.6 onward, Doctor can detect issues such as mismatched Storybook versions, duplicated dependencies, and incompatible addons. Treat its output as a diagnostic aid—not proof that every build error is a version conflict.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Point Chromatic at a prebuilt Storybook
If a separate local build succeeds and you want Chromatic to use that output, set storybookBuildDir in configuration or pass --storybook-build-dir. Confirm that the path points to the actual generated, valid Storybook directory. This option supplies built output; it does not rename a package script or define a custom build command. The configuration reference documents these options.

Collect diagnostics when the cause is still unclear
After reproducing the failure and checking the relevant script, build, dependencies, and output path, run the CLI with debugging and diagnostics enabled:
npx chromatic --project-token=<TOKEN> --dry-run --debug --diagnostics-file
Keep the CI log and generated diagnostics file. Chromatic’s configuration reference also documents a Storybook log-file option, which can help preserve build details for investigation.

For capturing a website screenshot as part of a workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It is not a fix for a broken Storybook build; use the steps above to diagnose Chromatic. ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and responses include page-verdict and billing headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and other MCP clients.
One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot:
