Choose a secure remote-support platform by evaluating how it controls identity, permissions, sessions, network traffic, and evidence—not by popularity or an encryption claim alone. Treat the software as a privileged access path: require strong authentication, least privilege, clear rules for attended and unattended access, useful audit records, and a way to disable access quickly. Then validate those controls on the exact product edition and deployment you plan to buy.

Why is remote-support software a security decision?

Remote-support tools can give a representative access to employee computers, servers, and business data. That makes them part of the organization’s access-control design, not just a convenience application. A legitimate tool can also be misused: CISA and partner agencies warn that threat actors exploit remote-access software and recommend establishing a baseline of normal activity and monitoring for unauthorized tools.

Start by defining who may connect, to which devices, under what approval, and for what purpose. Decide how the organization will detect unapproved installations, review sessions, revoke access, and respond to misuse. The platform can support those rules, but it cannot replace identity governance, endpoint security, logging, incident response, or an approved-use policy.

NIST SP 800-46 Rev. 2 frames remote-access security across access control, configuration management, contingency planning, identification and authentication, media protection, risk assessment, system and communications protection, and system and information integrity. In practical terms, remote support should sit inside a broader zero-trust approach rather than be treated as a trusted shortcut into the network.

NIST’s June 2025 zero-trust practice guide describes authorized access to enterprise resources distributed across on-premises and cloud environments for hybrid workers and partners. NIST reports that the guide had 24 collaborators and 19 example implementations. Those figures describe the guide’s development and examples, not the effectiveness of any remote-support product.

What security controls should a business require?

Set minimum requirements before comparing vendors. A platform that lacks a control your organization needs should not make the shortlist just because it has a familiar name or a long trust-center page.

Identity and administrator protection

  • Central identity: Look for single sign-on (SSO) or a strong identity-provider integration, and confirm which protocols and plans support it. Ask about SAML, OpenID Connect, and directory integration where relevant.
  • Enforced MFA: Administrators should be able to require multifactor authentication for representatives and privileged roles, not merely allow users to turn it on individually.
  • Phishing-resistant options: Prefer FIDO2 security keys for privileged users when supported. Microsoft describes FIDO2 keys as physical passwordless sign-in devices; possession of the key plus a PIN provides stronger protection than a username and password alone.
  • Separate roles: Check whether administrators, support representatives, auditors, and other users can receive appropriately limited permissions. Ask whether one account can both grant access and conceal or alter its evidence.
  • Safe recovery: Find out how a lost key, locked-out administrator, or identity-provider outage is handled. Recovery should be documented, limited, auditable, and resistant to becoming an MFA bypass.
  • Time-limited access: Confirm whether the platform can limit permissions by time, approval, asset, or support task. If it cannot, establish compensating procedures outside the tool.

BeyondTrust’s Remote Support documentation describes LDAP, SAML, Kerberos, OpenID Connect, and two-factor authentication options. That is an example of documented identity choices, not proof that every option is available in every deployment or license.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Permissions and credential handling

Ask what a representative can do by default and how the platform limits elevated actions. Check whether file transfer, command execution, clipboard access, rebooting, credential entry, or system changes can be restricted separately. Confirm whether elevation prompts are visible to the user or approver, and whether administrator credentials can be injected without exposing them to the representative.

Least privilege means more than giving someone a role called “support.” Scope access to the devices and actions a person needs, separate representative and platform-administrator responsibilities where possible, and review permission assignments when duties change. BeyondTrust documents granular control and password injection; verify the exact capabilities and configuration for the edition under consideration.

Audit records and session evidence

Require searchable logs that show who connected, which asset they accessed, when the session began and ended, how it was authorized, and what happened. Where the product records actions or commands, establish whether those details are available to investigators and administrators.

Session recording can help with investigations, training, and regulated workflows, but the presence of a recording feature is not enough. Ask who can view or export recordings, how long they are retained, whether sensitive content can be redacted, where recordings are stored, and whether access to recordings is itself logged. BeyondTrust’s Remote Support buyer guide identifies audit logs and session recordings as relevant controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Network and data architecture

Ask for the connection flow and deployment requirements, not just a statement that connections are encrypted. Establish whether traffic is outbound-only, which ports and protocols are required, how the product traverses firewalls or proxies, and whether a VPN is needed. Confirm how TLS and certificates are handled, including certificate validation and renewal responsibilities.

Also ask where customer data and session records are stored, how long they are retained, and how tenants or customers are logically separated. These questions matter whether the service is cloud-hosted or self-hosted; deployment model alone does not establish adequate isolation or security.

Operations, integrations, and vendor response

Check whether the platform fits the processes that keep access controlled after purchase: service-desk ticket linkage, endpoint inventory, alerting, log export, API access, identity-provider provisioning, and prompt deprovisioning. An integration is useful only if it carries the right information and can be maintained securely.

Ask how the vendor handles vulnerability reports, security updates, incident notifications, and product security advisories. Clarify who is responsible for updating agents, consoles, gateways, and other components in your deployment. ConnectWise describes a corporate information-security program based on NIST and ISO 27000 standards; buyers should still request security documentation for the specific remote-support service, because corporate posture is not a substitute for product-level controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between attended and unattended access?

Attended support is initiated or approved while the user is present; unattended access lets a representative connect without the user actively approving that session. The second model is operationally useful for managed devices, servers, and after-hours remediation, but it creates a higher need for explicit asset, time, approval, and logging controls.

Attended sessions

For user-facing support, verify what the employee sees before and during a connection, how they approve or deny it, and whether they can end it. Test whether the tool prevents a representative from bypassing the approval flow through another route. Document the expected workflow for support staff and employees so a legitimate session is distinguishable from an unexpected one.

Unattended sessions

Limit unattended access to a defined inventory of managed devices, rather than enabling it broadly by default. Use MFA for representatives, approval and scheduling rules where appropriate, and logs or recordings sufficient to investigate access. Review how unattended agents are installed, who can authorize them, and how they are removed when a device is retired or a support relationship ends.

BeyondTrust documents attended support, unattended access through Jump Clients and Gateways, and security and audit controls as distinct workflows. That separation is a useful reminder to assess each access mode independently; do not assume controls for an attended session automatically govern an unattended one.

How should I compare platforms without relying on brand popularity?

Compare each candidate against the same control questions, using the exact service, plan, deployment, and identity setup you expect to use. Product documentation describes possible functions; it does not establish that a feature is included in your edition or enabled in your environment.

Platform Documented evidence or capability in the cited material What a buyer should verify
BeyondTrust Remote Support Documentation describes attended and unattended workflows, granular control, session recording, password injection, logs, identity-provider options, and FIDO2 authentication. Confirm deployment, license, representative-concurrency requirements, and which controls are included in the selected edition.
TeamViewer Its trust center lists multiple security attestations. Documentation also describes security-key redirection. Security-key redirection requires a Tensor license, supported host software, a virtual security-key driver, and a FIDO-based key or smartcard. Verify the scope of attestations and the exact requirements for the purchased service.
Splashtop The vendor publishes ISO/IEC 27001, SOC 2, GDPR, and CCPA statements. Its support documentation describes OATH-TOTP and some USB-redirection scenarios with compatible YubiKeys. The current support article says direct FIDO2/passkey sign-in is not currently supported in the Splashtop Business application. Confirm authentication mode and plan support rather than assuming a security key works for direct sign-in.
AnyDesk The vendor publishes information about ISO/IEC 27001 certification for data-center partners and application-security practices. Request the exact certificate scope and product-specific security documentation; confirm what is covered by the partner certification versus the service you will use.
ConnectWise The company publishes corporate information-security practices tied to NIST and ISO 27000 standards. Request documentation for the specific remote-support product and distinguish corporate security practices from product-specific controls.

These entries are starting points for verification, not a security ranking. Attestations and vendor statements differ in scope and cannot be treated as interchangeable proof that two products, plans, or deployments provide equivalent protection.

How do I verify a vendor’s security claims?

Ask for the underlying report or certificate and check what it actually covers. A logo on a trust page does not tell you whether the evidence applies to the product, service version, geography, tenant, or deployment you are buying.

Build a verification record for each material claim with these fields:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Claim: What security property or certification is being asserted?
  • Covered product and service: Does it name the precise remote-support service and relevant components?
  • Scope: Which organization, facilities, cloud environments, processes, and data are included or excluded?
  • Dates: When was the report or certificate issued, and when does it expire or require review?
  • Geography and tenant: Does it apply to the region and service environment in which your business will operate?
  • Exceptions: Are there qualifications, exclusions, or customer responsibilities that affect your use?

AnyDesk cites ISO/IEC 27001 certification for data-center partners; Splashtop cites ISO/IEC 27001, SOC 2, GDPR, and CCPA commitments; and TeamViewer lists SOC 2, SOC 3, ISO/IEC 27001, and other trust-center materials. Treat those as vendor statements to validate against current, underlying evidence for the service you will buy. A certification or privacy commitment is useful context, but it does not replace checking access controls, architecture, retention, or your own configuration.

How should I run a proof of concept?

Use test assets and the exact plan, deployment tier, and integrations under consideration. A feature shown on a general security page may not exist in every edition, so validate each control in the environment you would actually operate.

  1. Set up administrator identity: Onboard an administrator, connect SSO or the intended identity provider, enforce MFA, and test FIDO2 or security-key behavior if required. Exercise the documented account-recovery path.
  2. Test attended access: Start a session with a test user, then deny it. Confirm what each participant sees and whether the denial and approval outcomes appear in the audit record.
  3. Constrain unattended access: Scope it to selected test assets, apply time restrictions or approvals where available, and remove access during offboarding. Confirm that the device is no longer reachable through the former enrollment.
  4. Check least privilege: Try the actions support staff should not have, including elevated actions and credential access. Verify representative separation, elevation prompts, and credential handling.
  5. Review evidence: Inspect session recording and logs for identity, target, time, authorization path, and outcome. Test export, retention settings, redaction, access to recordings, and alerting.
  6. Validate connectivity: Test the intended firewall, proxy, DNS, certificate, port, and outbound-traffic behavior. Record required exceptions so network teams can distinguish approved flows from unexpected ones.
  7. Exercise operations: Link a session to a service-desk ticket if applicable, test identity provisioning and deprovisioning, disable a representative, revoke a device, remove an endpoint agent, and investigate a test session.

A buyer-run proof of concept is a validation method, not a substitute for security review. Keep a record of the plan tested, configuration, results, unresolved gaps, and compensating controls so the purchase decision reflects the deployment you intend to run.

Should privileged staff use a FIDO2 security key?

A FIDO2 key can strengthen sign-in for administrators and support representatives when the platform supports it in the relevant login flow. A YubiKey 5 NFC security key is one example of an optional physical MFA device, but buy keys only after confirming compatibility with the chosen platform, plan, and authentication method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

BeyondTrust documents YubiKey-class FIDO2 authenticators for representative-console login. TeamViewer documents physical FIDO-key support and security-key redirection, with the redirection feature subject to its Tensor license and other technical requirements. Splashtop’s current support documentation says direct FIDO2/passkey sign-in is not currently supported in its Business application, although OATH-TOTP and some USB-redirection scenarios may work with compatible YubiKeys. A key that works for USB redirection is not necessarily a key that can authenticate directly to the application.

What should the ongoing governance policy cover?

Security depends on keeping the tool visible and access current after deployment. Assign an owner for the platform and define recurring reviews that cover both the vendor configuration and the organization’s actual use.

  • Approved tools: Maintain an approved list and monitor endpoints for unauthorized remote-access software, following CISA’s recommendation to baseline normal activity and watch for unapproved tools.
  • Identity lifecycle: Tie onboarding, role changes, and departures to timely provisioning and deprovisioning. Review privileged accounts and access grants on a set schedule.
  • Endpoint visibility: Ensure the endpoint security team can identify the support agent and distinguish approved activity from unexpected installation or access.
  • Session oversight: Define who reviews logs and alerts, how recordings are protected, and how long records are retained under the organization’s requirements.
  • Incident response: Document how to disable a representative, revoke a device, remove an agent, preserve evidence, and investigate a suspicious session.
  • Periodic reassessment: Recheck product scope, licenses, identity integration, evidence dates, network requirements, and vendor security documentation when the service or business needs change.

The right platform is the one whose controls can be verified in the specific deployment and then enforced consistently. If a vendor cannot explain the access path, evidence scope, logging, or revocation process clearly, treat that uncertainty as a procurement risk rather than assuming the advertised security features will fill the gap.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a remote-support platform replace a VPN?

Not necessarily. Whether a VPN is needed depends on the platform’s connection architecture and your network design; ask which ports and protocols it uses, how it traverses firewalls, and whether remote access is outbound-only.

Does SOC 2 mean a remote-support product is secure?

No single attestation establishes that a product is secure for every buyer or deployment. Review the report’s scope, dates, exclusions, and covered service, then validate the controls and configuration your organization needs.

What should I do if an employee installs an unapproved remote-access tool?

Follow your incident-response process: identify the software and activity, preserve relevant logs, and assess whether access occurred. CISA recommends monitoring for unauthorized remote-access software; your policy should specify who can isolate an endpoint and disable or remove access.

Is unattended remote access appropriate for a small business?

It can be appropriate for managed devices, servers, or after-hours maintenance when access is limited to approved assets and accounts. The business should also decide who authorizes access, how it is logged, and how it is removed when a device or support relationship is no longer in scope.
