“Multiple lord routes” does not describe one rule shared by every Fire Emblem game. In Fates, Corrin’s allegiance leads into distinct faction stories sold as separate versions; in Three Houses, the player chooses which house to teach, a decision Nintendo says has substantial later consequences; and in the 2026 release Fortune’s Weave, four protagonists’ stories can advance in parallel and ultimately converge. The practical question is which game’s route system you mean: that determines whether your choice changes the cast and battles, how freely you can switch stories, and whether buying a different edition matters.
What does “multiple lord routes” mean in Fire Emblem?
It is an umbrella term for games that let players follow different protagonists, factions, or story paths—not a promise that every game handles those paths the same way. A route may change the story’s point of view, which allies are available, the battles you face, or the challenge. It may also affect how a game is sold or whether you can change focus during a playthrough.
That distinction matters before making claims such as “your first choice is permanent,” “you can play every route in one copy,” or “the stories eventually join.” Those statements fit some of the examples here, but not all of them. Birthright, Conquest, and Revelation
The two principal versions present the conflict from different faction perspectives. Nintendo UK’s comparison of the original versions described 17 version-exclusive characters in each of Birthright and Conquest. That is a historical count for those two versions only; it is not a count for Revelation or for the series as a whole.
Revelation offers the “neither side” option. It was a third path, not a guarantee that either of the two main physical editions automatically included all three stories. Because Birthright and Conquest were sold as distinct 3DS versions, check the exact game edition rather than assuming one copy contains every route.
Does the choice affect difficulty?
Nintendo UK’s April 29, 2016 comparison characterized Birthright as welcoming to newcomers and Conquest as tougher, citing limited experience and gold and more demanding maps in the latter. That is Nintendo’s comparison of the original versions, not an independent difficulty measurement or a guarantee of how challenging either route will feel to every player.

What does the old download information mean now?
Nintendo says new purchases from the Nintendo 3DS eShop, including additional downloadable paths for Fates, ended on March 27, 2023. Consequently, a current buying guide should not promise that a new eShop purchase of Revelation is available. Nintendo’s European download-version page described choosing a path after completing Chapter 6; that is specific to the European download-version information and should not be treated as a universal purchasing procedure for every region or cartridge.
What does the house choice mean in Three Houses?
At the beginning of Three Houses, the player chooses which of three houses to teach. Nintendo’s listing frames the choice as a question of which house and path to follow, while its developers describe the early decision as having substantial later consequences. In other words, the choice is a meaningful commitment to a house’s story perspective, not just a cosmetic selection.
The evidence available here supports that high-level explanation, but not a complete guide to every later branch, its exact name, or its unlock requirements. Avoid assuming that the game uses the same allegiance-and-version arrangement as Fates, or giving step-by-step route unlock instructions without reliable details for the specific branch. The safe comparison is that Three Houses organizes its stories around the house the professor chooses to teach.

Nintendo lists a physical Switch game and separately listed DLC. Those are different product categories; the existence of DLC by itself does not establish that a particular route is included in a particular package. Check the specific edition and its listing if a route or add-on is the reason for a purchase.

Fire Emblem Fortune’s Weave was released in the United States on September 17, 2026, and is already available as of October 30, 2026. Its structure is different from a single early allegiance decision: Cai, Dietrich, Theodora, and Leda each have a path, and Nintendo says players can progress multiple hero stories in parallel.
Can you change protagonists after starting?

Why might one hero’s activities appeal more than another’s?
Nintendo describes different activities for the four protagonists. Cai can farm or care for animals; Dietrich can develop combat arts by defeating enemies; Theodora can recruit soldiers and deploy battalions; and Leda can perform in towns. These details give a sense of how the heroes’ activities differ, but they do not establish that every activity is available immediately in every path.
How do replay and character growth work?
The developers describe chapter-start replay points within a consolidated save system. They also say character growth from repeated builds later merges across routes or replays. These are Fortune’s Weave systems, not a series-wide rule: do not expect the same replay or shared-growth arrangement in Fates or Three Houses on this evidence.

Choose based on the kind of difference you want between stories, not on the assumption that “route” means the same thing in every game.
- Pick Fates if you want faction-based alternatives. Hoshido, Nohr, and neither side represent distinct story choices, and Nintendo describes differences in characters and battles between Birthright and Conquest. Pay particular attention to which version you are buying and what access to additional paths is actually available.
- Pick Three Houses if choosing a house is the appeal. The central decision is which of the three houses to teach, and Nintendo describes that early choice as consequential. The supported comparison here is at the house-choice level, not a full route-unlock walkthrough.
- Pick Fortune’s Weave if you prefer following several protagonists in parallel. You can switch between stories between matches, and the four paths contribute to a shared showdown. The first protagonist you choose is not presented as a lockout from the others.
For a physical copy, verify the platform and exact edition on the listing before buying.
