Think of a location choice as a preference, not a performance guarantee. Selecting a country specifies the connection’s location; it does not establish that the connection will be faster, that a particular server will always be available, or that a third-party website or streaming service will accept the connection. NordVPN’s recommendation accounts for considerations such as distance and load, but no independent speed comparison is established here.
How do I choose or change my NordVPN server in the app?
Open All locations and select the country you want. If the version of the app on your device shows additional city or server-number controls, you can refine the selection there. To change servers after connecting, return to the location list and select another available location; the exact interaction for disconnecting or switching can differ by app.

Can I choose a specific NordVPN server number?

Use Nord Account to get a configuration file for the server you want, then enter the file and separate service credentials in an OpenVPN-compatible client. This route is more involved than choosing a location in the NordVPN app, and is useful when your router or another supported client needs a manual configuration. It is optional; no router is required for normal server selection in the app.

- For a recommendation, open Server recommendation. NordVPN provides filters for server type and security protocol; use these if you need a type of connection but do not need a particular server number.
- For a specific server, open OpenVPN configuration files, find the desired server, and download its UDP or TCP configuration file.
- In the VPN client, import the configuration and authenticate using the separate values under Service credentials.
The two paths in Nord Account answer different needs. The recommendation tab and its filters help when you want a suitable recommendation by server type or security protocol but do not need to select a server number yourself. The configuration-file list is for selecting a specific server entry and downloading its UDP or TCP file. Choose the file that matches the protocol option you intend to configure; the downloaded file alone does not replace the separate login credentials.
Do not assume that your ordinary Nord Account sign-in password is the credential a manual VPN client needs. For a router, check that its exact model supports an OpenVPN client and can import the configuration file. NordVPN documents importing a selected-server configuration on a GL.iNet router. For most people asking how to pick a server, a standard server is the appropriate starting point. Double VPN is a two-server route, and NordVPN specifically warns that it can be slower; that is a trade-off to consider, not a measured speed result for every user. Why can’t I find P2P servers?
In newer NordVPN apps, the absence of a separate P2P category is expected: NordVPN says standard servers support P2P, so you can use a standard server instead. Older instructions that tell every user to find and choose a dedicated P2P specialty server are outdated for the app versions covered by NordVPN’s current help article.

NordVPN identifies the change in iOS and Android app versions 9.0.0, Windows 8.0.0, and macOS 10.0.0. Its official statement is: “All standard NordVPN servers now support P2P activities, including gaming and other peer-to-peer applications.” If you are using a version covered by that change, look for a standard server rather than troubleshooting a missing P2P category. What if a specialty server is missing?
A missing category does not necessarily mean your account or app is broken. Specialty options have platform and protocol requirements, and some have availability limits. First identify which category you need, then check its own requirements rather than treating all specialty servers as interchangeable.
- P2P: In the newer app versions NordVPN identifies, use a standard server; a distinct P2P category is no longer shown.
- Double VPN or Onion Over VPN: Check NordVPN’s category guidance for OpenVPN requirements and device support. Onion Over VPN may also be unavailable when Tor-node capacity is limited.
- Obfuscated: Consult NordVPN’s separate current instructions for this category. They say it uses NordWhisper, so do not apply other categories’ OpenVPN instructions to it. The guide includes desktop and mobile country-selection steps.
- Dedicated IP: This requires the separate add-on, and availability varies by platform. It is not needed to pick a regular country or server.
If you only want to change your connection location, use All locations and choose a country rather than searching for a specialty option. If you need a specialty function, use the relevant NordVPN instructions for your category and platform; a category may be unavailable because of requirements or capacity, not because a standard country selection is broken.

Auto-connect preferences and manual server selection solve related but different problems. Pick a country preference if you want the app to connect automatically using that country on a supported platform. It should not be described as a promise to retain the same numbered server each time. If you need a precise server number, the manual OpenVPN configuration route is the documented option for compatible clients.
